THE DH just casually prayed over my food. Amen 🙏🏾

wow i’m not christian but i bowed my head and prayed with you DH. i’ve been struggling with anxiety my whole life and you really help me with everything i love you ❤❤

When Daydrian prayed, it made me cry. ❤

At fifteen, I often found myself navigating the complex space of being both Mexican and Black. My appearance, a blend of both heritages, and my way of speaking, influenced by the diverse community I grew up in, frequently led people to stereotype me. They couldn't quite place me, and in their uncertainty, they often defaulted to assumptions that felt limiting and inaccurate, making me feel like an outsider in spaces where I should have felt belonging. The Weight of AssumptionsBeing placed in a box I didn't fit was challenging. Some assumed I was from a rougher background based on my style of dress or speech, while others questioned my Mexican heritage because I didn't fit their narrow image of what a Mexican person should be. This constant need to prove myself or explain my identity was exhausting. It made me feel misunderstood and at times, invisible, as people focused on the stereotype rather than the individual.Asserting My True SelfTo counteract these stereotypes, I started consciously embracing both sides of my identity. I made an effort to speak about my Mexican culture with pride, sharing traditions and stories. Simultaneously, I didn't shy away from the aspects of my personality and style that were influenced by my Black upbringing. I realized that being true to myself, in all my complexity, was the most powerful way to challenge the assumptions others made.Emotional Health as a FoundationThe component of health that was crucial for me in overcoming these stereotypes was emotional health. Learning to manage the feelings of frustration, confusion, and sometimes anger that came with being stereotyped was vital. By developing self-awareness and self-acceptance, I was able to build resilience. This emotional strength allowed me to stand firm in my identity and not let others' narrow perceptions define my sense of self-worth.Redefining My NarrativeOver time, as I consistently presented my authentic self, people began to see beyond the stereotypes. They started to recognize the richness of my dual heritage and the unique individual I am. While stereotypes may never completely disappear, I learned that by grounding myself in my emotional well-being and confidently expressing my multifaceted identity, I could redefine how I was perceived and foster more genuine connections.
