I was fortunate enough to listen to this live in Sawai Gandharv Mahotsav in Pune. You cant hear the final applauds clearly , but is was a standing ovation to these two  legends  and the clapping never stopped 🙏

that speed on santoor  is insane and for Zakeer to keep up on tabla is only pure genius

You have scratched the surface of Indian classical music

Fun fact: Sawai Gandharva aka Ramchandra Kundagolkar was a prominent Hindustani Classical singer. He was also the guru of Bharat Ratna Pt. Bhimsen Joshi. The Sawai Gandharva Festival was started by Pt. Bhimsen Joshi to commemorate his guru. After Panditji passed away, his disciples renamed the festival to Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav (Festival).

Both have passed away. Shivakumar Sharma son is getting to be almost as good.

Imagine Santoor sound in rainy day in the Himalayan reson &you are sitting in belcony with a cup of tea....

One of the best versions of Rag Kirwaani! Great !!

Foreigners appreciating Indian Music is a testament to the special status that Indian Music enjoys in the world. Indians don't know what a precious possession the country has.

There's a great performance from decades later between and older Zakir Hussain and the son of the Santoor Pandit in this video - Rahul Sharma. Love that one!

One would realize that Zakir had hard job at hand to match the speed but if you watch closely, you would realize that Pt. Shivkumar Sharma plays rhythm with one hand while playing the raga with other, he does that interchangeably. He plays rhythm with either hand or play the raga and get back to rhythm on one of the hands. It's truly incredible. Both complimented each other so well. I was fortunate to watch many of their concerts in Pune. In one of the concert, they played a tune composed in 9.5 beats. Zakir jokingly said he simplifies by playing 19 beats but both were masters at splitting the cycle of any no of beats into any other.

This is called "Jugalbandi", live musical duet, where two soloists play as equal partners.

"It is like a high-level jazz cutting contest combined with a classical-era concerto cadenza, featuring a playful, respectful musical conversation and friendly rivalry between two lead performers."

Listening to santoor, I feel like I am floating on water. This feeling is also sensed when another instrument called Jal Tarang is played. ❤

This kind of music is only possible after putting in many years of focused and rigorous, tireless efforts. INDIAN CLASSICAL MUSIC IS COMPLETE AND PLEASENT.

Zakir deserved to live for 300 years.. ❤

At 18:25 in the video, Pt Zakir hears the Santoor downward arpeggios once and starting next downward arpeggios adds in his own Tabla Bass descending arpeggios if you listen closely..! Such insane stuff,,!!

I had a good fortune of listening to Pandit Ji in 1970s up close in person in Mysore Maharaja’s palace hall and it was a Devine concert & experience. It is one of my favourite moments in my life. It is unforgettable experience!

To play SANTOOR at 16th note speed with precision and crystal clear voicing. Is absolutely incredible , unbelievable and AMAZING

No words can describe this performance.......lucky those, who were there to listen......

Namaste Richard, Johnny. Thank you again for a fantastic Saturday Sadhana video. You would be able to relate to this Raga Kirwani as it has the same scalar material as the Harmonic Minor scale of Western Music, which is very common in Spanish and Flamenco music. The Raga actually has been exported into Hindustani music from Carnatic Music within the last century, where it's called "Raga Keeravani". I recommend listening to renditions of the composition "Kaligiyunte" to appreciate how it is handled in Carnatic Music.
