Poor Jiang Cheng.  Plagued by his Mother’s twisted envy of Wei’s dead Mother, he never until the end - realized how much his father loved him.  Wei was brilliant, and in his Mother’s eyes, therefore Cheng’s, ‘ spoiled’by his Sister and Father.  Their Senior sister and Father did not see Wei as the beautiful, talented child of a hated rival. They recognizes a little boy, who probably witnessed, but did not understand the murder of his parents, and who for two years  later wandered the streets, fighting with wild dogs for food possibly being granted sips of wine from strangers rather than milk and nourishing soup.  Clan Leader Jiang and his daughter were naturally compassionate and kind people, while Madame represented the worst and the best of the upper class.  Wei was the son of servant  why should he be allowed to share the status of her son and eat seeds from the hands of her daughter?

Cheng did not  quite understand the ways of his Clan because he was taught by his mother that no such tradition existed.  His father— according to Madame-  was just conjoling Wei because he missed Wei’s amazing Mother.  
Cheng was attracted to Qing and understood that Qing and her brother put their lives on the line to save him.  however, if he thought like his mother, that saving him was what the siblings-because of their attachment to the Wen’s  were “supposed to do”- He could and did dismiss their sacrifice as a duty they owes to him. He offered Qing a way out, but she values her responsibility to her brother and people more than her life.  

But they did not “break up”.  Broken hearted Cheng agrees to Wei’s sacrifice because he (Cheng) lacks the courage to stand up to clans. Hate to say it say a certain villainous character was right: most of the tragedy to come could have been avoided if not for Cheng’s lukewarm defense of Qing  and her brother when Wei first asked for Wen Ning’s whereabouts.  
My heart broke for both of them. And as I don't know if I, personally, would have the courage to stand for the truth as Wei did, I can't condemn Cheng for it.   It was just sad-- more than the situation between Lan Zhan and Wei.

重看多遍，总感觉这一集有香港武侠片的味道。
