If you're looking for something different in Japan – something other than the usual Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, or Sapporo – then you may want to explore the Chubu Region in Central Japan.  It's an interesting area with many fascinating places to explore.
I traveled around the Chubu Region for five days with my Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass. It's a JR Pass that gives you unlimited travel on JR trains for five consecutive days so you can go to destinations like Kanazawa, Takayama, Nagoya, Shirakawa-go, Gokayama, Fukui, Toyama, and more.  You can even use it to go to Kyoto and Osaka.
