Cheat codes or principles for tackling PMP exam questions, focusing on the mindset a project manager should adopt:
Take a Step Back and Investigate (2:23-2:58) When faced with a situation, a Project Manager (PM) should not take direct action immediately. Instead, they should analyze the situation, investigate, and collect enough data to make a sound decision. This principle emphasizes gathering information before committing to a solution.
Impact on Schedule and Critical Path (7:09-7:19)
If a situation affects the project schedule, the PM should look at the critical path. The critical path is the sequence of tasks that determines the shortest possible duration of the project. Focusing on it helps understand the true impact of delays and explore options like reallocating resources or fast-tracking to get the project back on schedule. The video also highlights that you should generally avoid accepting delays (10:32-10:50) as they incur additional costs and dissatisfaction.
Eliminate Answers with Unmentioned Information (11:59-12:22)
Do not assume external information not explicitly stated in the question. If an answer option refers to something not mentioned (e.g., a "Lessons Learned register from past projects" when no past project is referenced), it should be eliminated.
Eliminate Answers with Limiting Words (15:38-15:49)
Avoid options that contain words like "only" or any other term that eliminates all other possibilities. These answers are usually too restrictive and don't allow for comprehensive problem-solving.
Do Not Reduce Team Member Capacity with Extra Training Tasks (18:27-18:42)
Avoid assigning experienced team members to train new members if it reduces their capacity for primary, critical tasks. Instead, encourage new team members to learn independently or through external resources, ideally outside of working hours, to avoid impacting project progression (20:14-21:16).
Refer to Past Projects/Lessons Learned (When Mentioned) (22:48-23:05)
If the question explicitly mentions a similar past project that was successfully completed, it's a strong indication to choose an answer that refers back to that project's Lessons Learned register or organizational process assets (OPAs) to solve the current issue.
Additionally,
Do Not Escalate Immediately (14:17-14:46, 24:58-25:12): Project managers should primarily solve problems themselves and avoid escalating issues to sponsors or higher-ups unless absolutely necessary (e.g., for major budget issues).
Do Not Ignore Problems (5:57-6:01): Never choose an option that suggests ignoring an issue, as it will likely lead to greater problems later.
Avoid Forcing Overtime (17:50-18:00): While sometimes a reality, forcing team members to work overtime is generally not the best first solution due to increased costs and potential friction.
Got certified today, thank you I cheated without getting caught 😂. I started pretty slow, for the 3rd section I had 55 minutes but using these 6 hacks I was able to finish 🎉
Hi Mohammed, i had struggled to grasp the approach to take this exam although i knew the topics and have been in this profession for over 25 years. And then I stumbled i to this video and many others from you that finally got me to apply the right mindset and today i git certified.. wow, thanks man for this amazing eye opener. I am sure thousands have and will benefit from your simple approach (23 steps is gold)..
There is a mistake in the new team member question. The correct answer is C, because the new member would focus on studying instead of contributing to the project, which will cause a problem with the project schedule.
Yep, I liked the title because I thought somewhat to have some tips for parsing through these dense questions! Excellent video and I’ll be watching more.
I must confess that I did not want to see the video initially due to the title - cos my line of thinking was if I did what you are proposing I would be caught since PMI may have known. Then something just said, see it before judging. When I did, I got of the most pleasant surprises of my life. Thanks Rahman, I have only got praise for you.
I showed these to my coworker, he took the exam.. not studying at all the weeks prior.. and he passed!!! He is GREAT at his job though, and I know he has the qualifications with or without it!
