Joan is just now, in her 80's, been able to forgive Bob. She said she painted his picture as he was when he was young, and suddenly the bitterness just went away. You see Joan was the famous one, and she introduced Bob Dylan to the world. Then he became famous, and took Joan on a tour of Europe with him, but he did not even allow her to perform on stage with him. He really treated her badly. At the end she says she doesn't want anymore diamonds and rust, because she's already paid the price. He broke her heart.

Joan was already famous when Bob Dylan came along. I would argue she is the one who did much to start his career.

She perfectly captures her relationship with Dylan in her beautiful, poetic and picturesque lyrics. It surely was an emotional part of her younger life, but the promise of a lifetime together didn't last forever like diamonds but eventually corroded like iron.

Ms. Baez was pouring out her heart on this song. She was crazy in love with Bob Dylan, but he was kind of distant with her and most other people. Just his personality. I loved it then and now.

Stumbled across this song a year or so ago. Baez at her absolute best here. This song written about Dylan calling her in the mid 70's , 10 yrs after they split. She absolutely nails it!!

When I was a child, Joan Baez was my fathers favorite artist. I've heard a lot of her work. I'm 6 decades old now .........................Pops passed 2 months ago.

It's really hard to explain the flashback of emotion this puts someone through that was growing up back then. Besides the absolute beauty of this performance, you would have to have lived through that time to know what you were being transported back to. Instant tears of joy and sadness at the same time. I now believe in time travel !

One of the great things about this song in its original recording is the stunning arrangement by the wonderful composer Peter Schickele.

Joan Baez was a major voice for social and racial justice and peace movements of the late sixties. Her performance of "Joe Hill" in the mist and rain at Woodstock is magical

I couldn't exactly remember where I had heard of her so I did a search and found she played at Woodstock in 69. Here's the info I found "Joan Baez performed at Woodstock in 1969, serving as the final act of the first day. She took the stage around 1:00 AM on Saturday, August 16, closing out the chaotic and rainy opening night with a set lasting approximately 60 minutes. Her performance included 14 to 15 songs, featuring tracks like "Joe Hill," "Sweet Sir Galahad," and the anthem "We Shall Overcome." Notably, Baez was six months pregnant during the festival and dedicated her closing song to her husband, David Harris".

Back in the 60/70's hair down to my shoulders, amongst us lads it was all Cream, Hendrix, Free, Purple, Sabbath, Taste, Santana, and that ilk, and the "folkies" sneered at. Joan Baez was my guilty secret, one of my girlfriends friends had this great collection of vinyl, a huge room where we could hang out, smoke, and we would all listen to music. among her collection she had Leonard Cohen, Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez, and if she put one of those first 3 on we'd all make our excuses and go to the pub. one day she put on Joan Baez and the guys all stood up, and said its nearly closing time we better split, but i said i'd stay as i wanted to get home early. i used to regularly go to her house, alone, just to hear Joan Baez, whose voice i absolutely adore.

if i was given a choice to meet any one person it would be Joan Baez, i've never known of anybody so compassionate towards her fellow man, a living saint, a heart of pure gold

I saw her perform in 1985, what an amazing voice and artist, and of course political activist. It's so hard not to be overwhelmed with nostalgia listening to this.

Her vibrato is so perfect. She was also socially and politically active in the 1960s and 70s and that lasted even into the 90s and 2000s, when she lent her voice and financial support to numerous worthy causes.

I had the good fortune to see her live in a concert at UC Berkeley in the spring of 1965 during my freshman year there. Her warm rich tone and powerful voice left a definite impression. She had already become established as a performer and political activist and was right at home at Berkeley, especially since she earlier lived across the bay in Palo Alto where she graduated high school just seven years earlier.
