José Manuel Mata grew up in an environment marked by addiction, violence, and neglect. At just eight years old, he witnessed his father's murder and, shortly after, was separated from his family and living in a foster home. The pain and feeling of being unloved led him to alcohol, marijuana, and later cocaine during his adolescence, along with destructive relationships and suicidal thoughts. At 22, completely desperate, he did something he had never done before: he asked for help from a God he didn't even believe in. He ended up entering a Catholic rehabilitation center, where he discovered a peace unknown to him in prayer, the Rosary, and community. However, upon returning to his old environment, he relapsed and once again confronted the wounds he still carried within.

After hitting rock bottom again, José Manuel began attending Mass even while still trapped in alcoholism. After being assaulted, he entered a church with a bruised face and begged God to change his mind and heart. From there began a transformation that led him to overcome his addictions, confront his traumas, and learn to forgive his father, his mother, his aunt, and even the man who murdered his father. Today, he shares his story on social media with the purpose of helping those who feel abandoned, addicted, or hopeless. For José Manuel, that life marked by pain found new meaning when he discovered faith: he went from feeling broken and lost to wanting to transform his wounds into a mission of service to others.
