Bessel van der Kolk grew up in a time when trauma was hardly spoken about. He is now one of the most well-known voices in this field. As trauma receives increasing attention, he warns of a new pitfall: trauma must not become an “alibi” to evade responsibility.

Despite this major focus on trauma, there is still much misery in the world. Van der Kolk advocates not only talking about trauma but also involving the body. In doing so, he looks to other cultures, where people seek out rhythm after profound experiences: they sing, dance, and harvest together. “Rhythm makes you feel safe. You know what is going to happen. With trauma, you never know.”
