I just bought a 1998 Z3 roadster about two weeks ago. At this time it is in the shop having a few things mended. I am not mechanical, but try to do the easy things myself. I like your channel and will be watching for future advice on how to keep my Z3 running smoothly.

So....I have a Z3 2.3 manual from 2000, and, at 61,139 miles, just had all the fluids changed including the transmission and it was NASTY. It was 25 years old and, with the new fluid, the gears fly through with precision...was not the case before. Also did the differential and it was OK. I own three bimmers and it is good to follow the dynamic component manufacturer's recommendation because there is no such thing as "for life" when you are an oil operating in a hot environment. I have not checked what Getrag recommends so i went with ZF's recommendations for my other bimmers which is before 70k miles.
Other top picks...if you use the wrong steering fluid, it will eat through the pipe very fast.
And final top tip, the Z3 does not like a low battery and the manual highlights the need to disconnect the battery if you park the car more than 2 weeks...and the jump instructions must be followed. If you end up with a low battery, you may start the car but will loose all the gauges except the speedo on mine. very weird.

I have the same car. 1998 BMW z3 1.9l 5 speed. It’s been making a whining noise up front which I replaced the belts and tensioners. Definetly solved some of the whining but it still makes a squeaking noise upon deceleration.
