Why are we surprised when people who don’t follow Jesus don’t live according to the teachings of Jesus?
In Episode 37 of Two Pastors: Conversations About Everything, we’re talking about “A Different Standard” and looking at Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 5:12–13:
“What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside?”
As Christians, we can become frustrated when the world doesn’t live according to Christian values. But why would we expect people who don’t claim to follow Jesus to live by the same standard as those who do?
We talk about the difference between conviction and condemnation, judgment and discernment, and why maybe we should spend less time policing those outside the church and more time examining ourselves inside it.
And here’s where the conversation gets uncomfortable: sometimes people who don’t profess to be Christians seem to do a better job of loving their neighbors than those of us sitting in church every Sunday.
Our calling isn’t to force people to live by Christian standards before they know Christ. Our calling is to follow Jesus, love people well, and point them toward Him.
Maybe the question isn’t, “Why doesn’t the world act more like the church?”
Maybe the better question is, “Does the church look enough like Jesus?”
