The arcade era of the 80s and 90s had a darker side that was rarely seen, games so gory, so strange, or so geographically localized that they have been lost to history. I have spent countless hours hunting these down and a number of the discoveries I have made have truly surprised me. These are eighteen games, some unknown, some banned, and some that have been forgotten. Come on, lets go.

I played Chiller at FunSpot in New Hampshire a few months ago!

I sunk an ungodly amount of quarters into Time Killers and Blood Storm with my classmates after school, man I miss the old arcades.

Time Killers was great!

"Armless Victory" if you happen to win after losing both arms.

I keep thinking I remember a game that looked like Tecmo Knight except for one important distinction: the enemies took way more damage. I remember seeing the attraction mode of a game at Walmart where the hero kept slashing these bulldog-looking creatures 'till their heads were bloody, and then they just came back for more! I was really struck by the amount of blood.

I remember playing Time Killers on arcade machine in a video store after school. I remember being able finish a round by just decapitating the opponent straight away 😅.

Should have reviewed Splatterhouse. That was over-the-top gore when it came out.

BloodStorm… Aaah still recall TALON shouting his name in Victory

Mortal Kombat predates Time Killers, coming out earlier in the year.

I've never heard MAME pronounced that way. I've always pronounced it "maim".

I remember me and my best friend playing Chiller while we were waiting for the batting cages to free up when we were in little league. It was the late 80's/early 90's and no one gave a fuck.

I could've sworn Shadow Force was getting a re-release for modern consoles as part of a collection. But I tried looking it up and can't find anything now. Maybe I dreamed it...

Dude there is nothing compared to own a pc in the 90's we were kids and our parents never noticed us playing doom, blood, carmageddon or quake, these arcade games are not even the half of gory of those not to mention a ton of those point and click feverish nightmares too many to name in here

I love Time Killers. It normally gets a lot of hate and is frequently called a Mortal Kombat clone despite the fact there are no similarities to MK outside of the blood. The designers of the game (Incredible Technologies) talked about the inspiration for the game years ago. The game itself started as an attempt to cash in on the Street Fighter craze. The idea for the gore was actually the Black Knight in Monty Python and The Holy Grail. I’m not kidding. The characters were inspired by different films. Rancid is inspired by Ash. Matrix is inspired Ripley. It’s true that you could end a match by lopping off your opponent’s head at any time, but the wind up for it is so slow it’s really easy to avoid. Also you couldn’t lop off legs. They followed it up with Bloodstorm, which did let you lop off legs too. However Bloodstorm is awful in every possible way. Ugly to look at, sluggish to play and very generic.
