One of the best description of Benny I have heard is that he is always "1 steps ahead of death, 2 step behind dignity."

"HEY BENNYYYYYYYYY

YOU'RE ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE RIIIIIIIVEEEEEEEER"

That chair chucking scene will forever be one of my favorite movie moments

A High & Dry reaction of Van Hellsing with Hugh Jackman would be great. Same vibe as this movie.

It's incredible what killed Benny in the end was his greed. He was able to escape with gold, but wanting more was what killed him.

In The Mummy lore, resurrection works differently depending on the state of the body. When Anck-Su-Namun was first brought back in part one, her soul returned but only into her preserved mummy form. To restore her to a living human body, a sacrifice was required — which is why Evie was chosen as the vessel. This mirrors Imhotep’s own resurrection, where he rose as a decayed corpse and had to consume the lives of others to regenerate. By contrast, when the body is still whole and intact, as with Evie in The Mummy Returns or with Anck-Su-Namun’s descendant, the Book of the Dead alone is enough to restore life without sacrifice. Thus, the rule is consistent: a destroyed or incomplete body needs a living host to return, while an intact body can be revived directly by the Book.

The fact the Eric looked up how the ritual works just to find more questions is hilarious.

no you guys don't understand how much Rick saying "you're in her seat" altered my brain chemistry as a young girl.

The Halloween after this was released, I dressed up as Evelyn for a costume contest at school. When asked what I was, I did her drunken "I... am a librarian." line. Sadly, no one got the reference but I got 3rd place and they made me take a picture with our librarian for the school paper.

Did anyone else notice Imhotep call Evelyn "princess" in this movie to then have an "aha" moment in the next film?

Fun fact: When the mummy was being produced , it only had ten million dollars in budget, but when they found out how good the script was , they gave it aneither seventy million to complete the project, after that it was a success.

The reason why Imhotep was cursed in that particular way is that, as you can clearly see, the Book of the Dead makes it fairly easy to bring a dead person back to life. But a corpse with such a curse—where reviving him would unleash something like the Ten Plagues of Egypt—no Egyptian in their right mind would ever dare to resurrect. So the curse itself was a kind of “protection against the curious” — it didn’t make Imhotep immortal, but rather so dangerous that it was easier just to leave him alone. The irony lies in the fact that the ancient Egyptians correctly calculated the mindset of their contemporaries, but they could never predict that three thousand years later, European archaeologists, bookworms, and adventurers would appear who wouldn’t take those texts as seriously.

At FanExpo, Kevin O'Connor said for the different religious prayers, he was given tapes of actual people praying, and he learned each prayer in the voice of the person. He said the Chinese one was a young woman, which is why his voice goes up so high on that one.

1:09:55 “Imhotep go BRRRR!” goddamnit Calvin that might be one of the funniest things you’ve ever said

Fun fact: Cleopatra lived closer to the present day than she did to the construction of the Pyramids.  Also, my grandfather got sick after visiting some tombs and climbing in one of the pyramids.  He joked that the Curse of the Pharaohs got him, but then again... he was on oxygen for the rest of his life because of it.
Also, the way that the curse upon Imhotep works is that he's denied the Afterlife by stripping his identity and his ability to completely die.  But to accomplish this they cursed him with powers that made him functionally immortal, but not invincible, as they cut him up (ie: mummified him alive) and fed him to the bugs to torment and degrade him/his remains for millennia.  When they opened his sarcophagus and spoke the words from the book, they woke him up and recalled his wandering soul back to its body.  Ancient Egyptians believe the soul walked the Afterlife during the day but returned to sleep in the body at night.  By having him buried beneath Anubis, they were warding his soul away from his body, so that it was a wandering ghost that had could never rest.  By Egyptian standards this is truly one of the worst fates a person could experience.

For the record the curse is to stop others from trying to dig him up or bring him back to life. So giving him powers to end the world is their punishment

John Hannah claimed in interviews that he didn't have the best time shooting the film because he felt the character of Jonathan was pretty redundant: he had been hired as a comedic actor but Beni was far more prevalent as the comedy relief and he didn't work as a sidekick either since Evy fulfilled that role as well. Whenever Hannah tried bringing this up to Stephen Sommers, the latter would just tell him to make something up. Luckily, later films in the series would give Jonathan a more focused role as the comic relief and give him more stuff to do.

When you guys started high and dry this is the movie I was hoping you would watch one day. This and Starship Troopers.

Fun facts and fan theory.

The second last American (guarding Evie's room) tried out for playing Rick. While he didn't get the role. They liked him enough to give him this smaller role.
His costume is probably a nod to being like Rick, but just not enough to survive.

Fan theory goes that Jonathan is a traumatised WW1 veteran, hence the drinking and death seeking, it's maybe a little more obvious with the rifle scene in the second film but he knows guns and stands with Rick and Ardeth against the mummy priests.

The thing that shows the quality of Rick's character and is heroic nature, is that even after all of that

He still tried to help Benny and seems actually remorseful he couldn't.

Rick's arsenal is not only incredibly cool but historically accurate for the era. Being a Legionnaire, he's carrying a good amount of French guns and hence probably had tons of ammo for his revolvers, and the most advanced weapons he's got are time accurate with his 1911's and breakdown shotgun (and the armorer going to the effort of getting actually 1911 pistols and not the A1 version was an impressive touch).
