FFVII's ending was famously ambiguous, and spurred passionate debate in-person and online. Today, we look at an oversight from the game's developers that contributed to those conversations, as well as a more recent "mistake" that's resurrecting old questions.

Special thanks to our friend Theozilla for first making us aware of the change between Advent Children and Advent Children Complete. This video wouldn't have been possible without him.
We are also incredibly grateful to Shademp, Jason Maltz, the staff behind 7th Heaven, the folks on Qhimm's forums, and all other members of FFVII's magnificent modding community, past and present, for forging and discovering the tools and material to make Shinra Arch's work possible. We are ever mindful that we stand on the shoulders of giants.

The planet survived, and seemed to be flourishing.
Whether humanity survives or not, those that are gone go back to the life stream.
The natural order of life, death and rebirth was no longer being exploited or corrupted.
So even if humanity is gone, they're not really gone gone.
Besides that's just one place. The world is bigger than Midgar. And Midgar could only exist by sucking up Mako energy. Humanity actually learning the right lesson and not hurting the planet anymore. Or being gone completely.
It doesn't actually matter. Either way, Midgar would be abandoned.
Many years ago I also read something (sorry I don’t remember where) that said the original plan was for all of humanity to eventually die out as a result of the events of the game. Kind of like Geostigma eventually succeeded.
Even if the writers intended that yes, humanity is worthy of the Planet, they make you sit with the implications for a while.
Aerith: Then I’ll send up smoke!

800 years in the future… One Midgar with smoke, another Midgar without smoke…
Fragmented worlds reuniting…
Hmm…
