The Defence Forces will not become a viable career if Ireland has no operational deployments, former Army Ranger Cathal Berry has warned.
It comes after the Taoiseach said Irish troops will not serve in Lebanon without a UN mandate - while Defence Minister Helen McEntee said Ireland is "absolutely" among countries willing to contribute to a European mission.
The current UNIFIL mission in Lebanon ends in December with planning is underway for a possible EU-led replacement.
Mr Berry told Morning Ireland it is "desirable" that Irish troops will be deployed to some kind of a post-UNIFIL arrangement.
