Honestly, I think series 8 was worse. The overall theme gets darker and more mean-spirited to the point where the series becomes a little depressing to watch. They also fundamentally changed Dobby's character so there can be some more tension with a rushed conclusion between Mark and Jez in Quantocking II.
I think one of my favourite things about S9 is the final shot of the final episode of Mark and Jez sat in the living room. It's not shown from anyone's point of view. If anything it seems to be from the TV's point of view. We're out of the characters' heads and maybe even on the other side of the window, looking in. It's one of the most subtle parting shots I've ever seen, to the point where I'm probably doing a big Mark in my pants and just reading too much into it.
The fact that even the 'worst' series has moments that have made me belly laugh shows how strong the show was across the board. There are only a couple of episodes overall that stand out as mediocre to me
Whilst I agree with most your points. As someone who works as a receptionist and is training to be a therapist. Trust me, people you've just met lore dumping their entire life and scenario to you for no reason happens constantly in real life
I think one of the reasons it feels a little off is because they try doing a "Mark becomes Jeremy/Jeremy becomes Mark" arc for both. Mark starts making crazy impulse decisions, like the dinner, to try and ruin another relationship for his own gain Jeremy on the other hand finds himself acting all weedy and lying to hide his insecurities about his age and job to keep a dead relationship going
Maybe they needed a line where this was actualised for the audience, but I also feel that was the point of the running joke about Wolves in the UK
Poor season overall but perfect final scene of them having learnt nothing, sat on the same sofa they were at the beginning of the whole show, only older and sadder.
I always thought the thing of the throuple announcing themselves to strangers was odd too, but thinking about it now, it might actually be characteristic of what three people who take 5 minutes to decide they're going to enter into a polyamorous relationship would do.
I think the last scene of the show is meant to represent how Mark and Jeremy have yet to find their place in the world and only really fit with each other.
They went out into the world and tried to change and grow, but were still unable to find their place. It always felt like they were people who never felt comfortable around any friends, family or lovers.
Its cyclical right? The last episode ends just as the first begins and you go back and do it all again. Theyre stuck in the mother of all ruts and theyll do it all over again making the same mistakes and always ending up back together
Sometimes videos like this make me realise that I just don’t pay attention to good/bad writing in a lot of shows. So much of this stuff just goes unnoticed by me
As someone who's watched all of Peep Show a billion times, I kind of like that season 8 & 9 are just a compilation of random things happening. The mid seasons, while objectively way better quality, are so plot heavy they are not as enjoyable to re-watch repeatedly. I can turn on season 8 & 9 and not remember exactly how every episode goes.
