American government officials are aboard a specially equipped 737 military jet. Rain makes their journey increasingly difficult, and when the plane stops responding to air traffic controllers, they immediately begin a search. The plane is found in debris in the hills near the airport.

Why could not the highly trained army personnel reach their destination?

From Season 4 Episode 8 "Fog of War": In April 1996, American government officials and high-powered U.S. businessmen were on a trade mission to Bosnia and Croatia. The last leg of the trip took them to Dubrovnik.

Their aircraft was a specially outfitted 737 military jet and the crew were all experienced military personnel.

Just after three o’clock, local air traffic controllers lost contact with the American plane.

After several hours of searching, a local farmer calls in a tip. Eventually, the plane is found high in the hills outside of the airport. It’s in pieces. There are no survivors. The American Air Force launches an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.

So basically, Dubrovnik had a landing strip and some radios…..no radar, no beacons, crap weather and they called it an airport. 🤦‍♀️

I remember when this happened. The loss if Ron Brown was significant both because of his role in government and because of the kind of person he was. Those demoted deserved it. An unapproved airport is an unapproved airport. Period. No exceptions.

I remember this, but never knew all the detes. It's so frustrating to watch these crashes that could've easily been prevented.

I was in Mali in the fall of 1973 with the US Air Force. Sometimes I could hitch a ride on our C-130's and get to see towns in the Sahara (Tombouctou for instance). On one of these trips I was talking to the Navigator who was consulting his charts and asked him where were we? He turned to me and told me to come over and look at the chart. It was blank (It was too remote to be charted) in the area we were to fly through. I guess we were in the blank portion of Mali! LOL The things you remember!

One thing about the Air Force... when accidents happen, heads roll. Nothing the officers in command could have done to cause or prevent this crash. The real culprits are the politicians who press these useless missions in adverse conditions - the ones least likely to carry the blame.

Inadequate landing system? I mean sure but they were in the process of replacing the ILS. It’s just bad luck the replacement wasn’t completed before the accident. I don’t think it’s the fault of the airport that the plane didn’t have all the proper equipment needed for the backup landing system.

After years discovering pilots are human and make mistakes, so aid them the best they can, why would they hamper Air force pilots/planes......

The ADF uses a frequency close to AM radio; remember how well those worked during a storm? Lightning will cause that ADF needle to jump all over the place, definitely a NON-precision approach!
