Chest X-ray interpretation is examined in both MRCP Part 1 and MRCP Part 2. The exam tests systematic pattern recognition on plain films — assessing film quality first, then reading in a fixed order — rather than radiology-level detail. This video covers the approach we teach.
WHAT THIS COVERS
Checking film quality using the RIPE mnemonic (Rotation, Inspiration, Picture area, Exposure), then a systematic A to E read of the film. We work through 25 chest X-rays so you can build the pattern recognition the exam expects.
THE SHORT ANSWER
Most candidates lose marks on chest films by starting with the obvious abnormality instead of reading systematically — which is exactly how the second, subtler finding gets missed. Assess quality first. Then read in the same order every time: airway and trachea, breathing and lung fields, circulation and cardiac silhouette, diaphragm and costophrenic angles, then everything else. The order matters more than the speed.
WHO THIS IS FOR
NHS doctors in Internal Medicine Training (IMT1, IMT2, IMT3), international medical graduates preparing for MRCP in the UK, and post-MBBS or post-MD doctors sitting MRCP from India and the Gulf.
