Day 5 of my Norfolk birding holiday took me to the incredible Cley & Salthouse Marshes on the North Norfolk coast, where I spent the day exploring reedbeds, marshes, coastline and coastal lagoons in search of some of Norfolk's best wildlife.
Join me as I explore this famous stretch of the Norfolk coast, starting the day in the Bishop Hide at RSPB Cley Marshes in search of one of my favourite reedbed birds, the Bearded Reedling. From there, I headed along the sea bank looking for Marsh Harriers before making my way onto the beach to search for seabirds and waders.
The day finished at the Central Hides, where the wetlands produced even more fantastic wildlife encounters.
Throughout the day I encountered an amazing variety of species, including Black-headed Gulls, Redshanks, Avocets, Spoonbills, Ruffs and Little Ringed Plovers. Around the reedbeds, Sedge Warblers and Barn Swallows were also busy, while Blue Tits, Kestrels and Little Egrets added even more variety to the day's birding.
The Bearded Reedling was one of the birds I was particularly hoping to find, making the early morning visit to the Bishop Hide a great start to the day. Marsh Harriers also provided some brilliant moments as they quartered low over the marshes, while the coastal habitats offered a fantastic selection of waders and other birds.
Cley & Salthouse Marshes continue to show exactly why the North Norfolk coast is regarded as one of the UK's premier birdwatching destinations, with an incredible mixture of reedbeds, freshwater marshes, lagoons, saltmarsh and coastline all packed into one area.
This video features wildlife encounters, coastal birdwatching, wader highlights, species highlights and my full camera setup using the Canon EOS R7 and RF 100-500mm lens.
If you're planning a birdwatching trip to Norfolk, Cley & Salthouse Marshes should absolutely be on your list. Whether you're looking for Bearded Reedlings, Marsh Harriers, waders or coastal birds, there's always something to discover.
