Cruis’n USA 64: Uncensored Arcade Edition is an unofficial, work-in-progress restoration and enhancement of Cruis’n USA for Nintendo 64.
IMPORTANT: No ROMs, private builds, or copyrighted game files are being distributed or linked through this video. If the project is publicly released in the future, the current plan is to use a patcher requiring users to supply their own legally obtained game files.
This is an unofficial fan project and is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by Nintendo, Midway, or any other rights holder. All trademarks and copyrighted material remain the property of their respective owners. Please do not ask for ROMs or private builds.
ABOUT THIS VIDEO
This playthrough features the TRUE 320×480 Expansion Pak build, rendering internally at a genuine 320×480 using the N64 Expansion Pak and 8 MB of RAM.
Recorded on an Analogue 3D with Horizontal Enhancement enabled and overclocking set to Unleashed. Because the Analogue 3D provides additional horizontal enhancement and increased system performance, the image quality and frame rate shown here do NOT represent stock Nintendo 64 performance.
The goal is to bring as much of the original Cruis’n USA arcade experience as possible back into the N64 version while restoring cut content, correcting bugs, improving presentation, and adding new options.
This project is still under active development, with bugs continuing to be squashed, existing features being refined, and new improvements actively being tested.
TRACK-SPECIFIC RESTORATIONS
(in course progression order)
• GOLDEN GATE PARK — Restored the original Corn Pops billboard.
• IOWA — Restored deer with collision and impact behavior. Corrected the grass to the appropriate yellow/gold across the terrain, roadside verges, and bridge sections while preserving intentional green areas near the finish.
• INDIANA — Restored cows with collision and impact behavior, including the original cow moo.
• WASHINGTON, D.C. — Restored the arcade money-tunnel artwork and the White House hot-tub ending, including Bill Clinton, both women in the tub, four animated background women, the original pickup truck, animated water, presidential seal, introductory lettering, scene audio, improved camera movement, and corrected transitions.
ANIMAL SYSTEM
• Animals can appear on either side of the road, including the oncoming lane, while preserving the original spawn pacing.
• Improved collision detection follows the visible animal more closely and accounts for vehicle tilt, allowing a vehicle that physically clears an animal to miss it.
• Corrected impact-effect backgrounds and repeated Indiana/Iowa loading freezes.
ARCADE & PRESENTATION RESTORATIONS
• Restored the original arcade trophy presenter using all six animation frames, with corrected proportions, positioning, and a complete offscreen exit.
• Restored XL POWERSHAFT artwork in the transmission-selection menus.
• Selectable N64 or ARCADE music modes, including all seven original arcade racing tracks and arcade music for menus/results. Selected arcade voices and sound effects have also been restored, along with numerous playback, looping, mixing, engine, and crowd-audio improvements.
• Regular courses are unlocked from the beginning while preserving the hidden-course button combinations, normal race progression, and original car-upgrade mechanics.
320×480 EXPANSION PAK BUILD
• Genuine 320×480 internal rendering using the Expansion Pak’s 8 MB of RAM.
• Updated viewport, HUD, rendering, and framebuffer handling for the increased vertical resolution.
• Fixed the trophy-screen transition so the complete 480-line background is captured and redrawn correctly.
The standard-resolution build contains the restoration, gameplay, artwork, and audio improvements as well. The 320×480 build adds the high-resolution rendering system demonstrated here.
Any future release information will be announced publicly when it is ready.
