I prefer to leave everything stand all winter because it provides habitat for native bees to overwinter(especially in hollow stemmed plants like bee balm) and it provides a much needed food source for birds, as well as winter interest for humans. Also, leaving plants stand helps provide some protection to the plant itself to help it overwinter and acts as a wind and snow break. I prefer to do cleanup in the spring before everything fully wakes up. Then I’ll cut or break up stems into smaller pieces and simply spread them about in the very same flowerbed from whence it came. This still allows for bees that might not have emerged yet from over wintering in stems, plus it makes for some free “mulch” which will soon be completely unseen when everything flushes out and from there it’ll break down and add nutrients to the soil. If fall cleanup is your preference, you can cut everything up into small pieces and spread it onto flowerbeds and let it breakdown over winter naturally (but don’t smother the soil too much). I personally like the sight of snow mounded up on a purple coneflower seed head with a goldfinch feeding from it in the middle of winter 😊

Fantastic video! I just wanted to add that I used to work in a packaging facility where fungal spores were very common, and we used to use Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) to clean tools between packaging jobs; however, we had to add a sanitizing step via the state (AZ) because IPA is not rated to kill fungal spores specifically. It takes hours of contact with the IPA to kill even the weakest of spores, we learned.

I just wanted to add this information to the discourse, and I hope it helps someone :)

Instead of bagging or shredding leaves, simply move them from where you don't want them. They provide a great natural mulch and, most importantly, provide overwintering habitat for insects that we want to come back next year.

Great information, and clear cut. No forwarding through any yada, yada, yada, I just paused to jot down notes...much preferred! For those who need specific direction for a plant not mentioned, try googling it, looking it up in a reference book, or calling your local extension office. :)

I don/t prune my ornamental grass down as they add winter interest in zone 7A but wait until spring, Your hellebores look beautiful and I have recently planted lenten rose but no flowers yet but my understanding is they take time to bloom! Nice to see all the beauty in your garden. Yes, hostas have been cut down to the ground as I learned if you don't they get unsightly looking! Thanks for all of the info, Steph!
