Project Farm

Which car engine air filter actually protects your engine best while maximizing airflow? In this video, we put 15 popular engine air filter brands through rigorous laboratory-style testing to find out which brand delivers the best filtration and airflow performance.

Tests Conducted:
• Total filter media length & surface area
• Initial airflow rate (CFM performance)
• Dust capture efficiency at 5-micron & 10-micron levels
• Airflow restriction / CFM drop after heavy dust exposure

Brands Tested: Purolator, MOTOALL, PHILTOP, KAX, K&N, BOSCH, Spearhead, DNA, A-Premium, Wix, FRAM, ECOGARD, ACDelco, and EPAUTO.

I purchased all of the air filters in this review to ensure a completely independent and unbiased test. Thank you for supporting the channel!

Longtime watcher here. Let's all give Todd a hand for designing all these experiments. Not matter what he's comparing, he always has a host of great experiments set up to give us incredibly dependable results. Bravo, Sir !!

Now you need to test cabin air filters and see if they even do anything

Hey Mr PF....Thanks for this test...... If I may say......forget the fact that you purchase all the products yourself .....forget the fact that it must take you hours to test , video and edit your videos....But WOW! you must spend tens of hours making test beds and rigs for each set of items you test AND you must be buying all this gauges and testers .....So thank you for bringing these tests to us and all you do...... I was talking to my wife regards to what you do and how I have made purchases on the basis of your tests..... You are the Best Testing Channel ANYWHERE!

I used to be an engineer for Purolator. I was a manufacturing engineer working on new products. We made great filters.

i give this guy my full support by finishing his videos. he saves us a lot of money and time doing all the punishing trials so we don't make costly errors. thank you sir. tons of respect and well wishes from the Philippine Islands.

As I suspected for K&N... It would have performed better if you put the K&N window sticker on the test box... lol

For those asking about testing MANN Filters, German filtration giant MANN+HUMMEL took full ownership of Purolator in 2013. I would guess they preform similarly.

If you have Oil Analysis performed, (I use Speed Diagnostics) you can see these results in real time. I had a K&N air filter and my silica was off the charts at 5K miles. Switched back to OEM and it went below the baseline.

I'm one of the lucky folks who still lives on a dirt road. I drive miles on dirt almost daily. PULLING OUT THE FRAM filters tomorrow! Purolator GOING IN TOMORROW. Thank You, I never even considered that it wouldn't do its job.

I have a 10 year old K&N washable in my Corolla, no issues ever, still working fine.

"Back in the day" our company ran a similar series of tests of filter media. It needed a PDP 11/50 computer, a vortex shedding flow meter and a Laser Doppler setup. You ran a better test by yourself with handheld instruments at a fraction of the cost of our test. Well done sir.
