Why Rome Put a Pope's Corpse on Trial: The Cadaver Synod

In the Cadaver Synod, the strangest trial in medieval dark history, they dug the Pope up after nine months in the ground, dressed what was left of him in the gold and white of his office, sat the body upright on the papal throne and put it on trial. Then they gave it a lawyer: a young deacon hidden behind the throne, made to answer the charges out loud in the dead man's voice. This is one of the darkest episodes in ancient and medieval history, and it is one of the best documented.

It happened in January 897, in the basilica of St John Lateran, in front of a council of bishops who sat there and let it happen. Historians call it the Synodus Horrenda: the Cadaver Synod. It is the only time in the entire history of the papacy that a Pope was exhumed and tried as a corpse.

WHO FORMOSUS WAS:
Born c. 816; Bishop of Porto; papal legate to Bulgaria and to the Frankish kingdoms
Fell out with Pope John VIII, was excommunicated, and swore never to return to Rome or act as a priest
Was elected Pope anyway in 891 — the fact his enemies never forgave
Crowned Lambert of Spoleto emperor, then invited Arnulf of Carinthia to take Rome and crowned him instead

WHAT HAPPENED AT THE TRIAL:
Formosus died in April 896; the body was exhumed in January 897, roughly nine months later
It was vested in full papal robes and propped upright on a throne to face its accusers
Pope Stephen VI shouted the charges at the corpse in person
A terrified deacon was hidden behind the throne to answer in the dead man's voice
The charges: perjury, ambition, and unlawfully transferring from the see of Porto to the see of Rome

WHY THEY MUTILATED THE BODY:
In medieval theology a bishop's authority passes through physical touch — the hands are the instrument of the office
The synod declared every act of Formosus null, including every ordination he had ever performed
Hundreds of priests across Italy were told they had never really been priests
Three fingers of the right hand — the blessing fingers — were cut from the corpse to seal the judgment in flesh

WHAT HAPPENED NEXT:
The body was buried in a common grave for foreigners, exhumed a second time, and thrown into the Tiber
It was recovered from the river; accounts differ as to whether by a monk or a fisherman
An earthquake brought down the Lateran basilica, and public feeling turned
Stephen VI was deposed, imprisoned and strangled within the year

So can you judge the dead? A trial exists so a defendant can answer. Take away the answer and you have a ceremony wearing a trial's clothes. And if Stephen VI set out to erase a name, why is Formosus the one we still remember?

WHY ROME COULD NOT LET HIM REST:
Formosus was born around 816 and made Bishop of Porto, a small coastal see outside Rome, and was sent abroad on the papacy's most delicate missions - to Bulgaria, where Khan Boris was deciding whether his newly converted people would look to Rome or to Constantinople, and to the Frankish kingdoms
The Bulgarians asked for him to stay as their archbishop, and that request began his troubles: in the Church of that century a bishop was married to his diocese for life, and moving to a greater see was, in canon law, something close to adultery
Under Pope John VIII he fell from favour, was accused of conspiring against the papacy, fled Rome, was excommunicated and stripped of office, and was allowed back only after swearing publicly never to return to Rome and never again to act as a priest
In 891 he was elected Pope. To his enemies that was not an election but proof that the office had been taken by a perjurer
