1. FRAME STABILITY: Check the main tubular frame for cracks or heavy rust (especially the rear loop and engine mounts).
2. NUMBERS GAME: Verify that the Frame and Engine numbers match the V5 logbook. Check for signs of grinding/re-stamping.
3. THE WIGGLE TEST: Grab the rear wheel and front forks—check for any lateral "play" (side-to-side movement) in the bearings.
4. FLOORBOARD CHECK: Look underneath the floorboards for rot or "bodge" repairs hidden by fresh paint.
5. THE COLD START: Feel the engine casing. If it's warm, the seller pre-heated it. Insist on seeing it start from stone cold.
6. GEAR SELECTION: Test the gears while the engine is running. Ensure it clicks into 1st and Neutral cleanly without jumping.
7. TANK INSPECTION: Use a torch to check inside the fuel tank for rust flakes or "gummed up" old fuel.
8. FORK ALIGNMENT: Stand at the front. Ensure the wheel, mudguard, and headset are perfectly aligned and not twisted.
9. ELECTRICALS: Check the horn, brake light, and headlight. Rev the engine—if lights dim heavily, the stator/regulator may be weak.
10. PAPER TRAIL: Ask for receipts. Parts from reputable shops like SIP, MB, or Casa Lambretta are a sign of a well-maintained machine.
