A walking foot is your best friend in rag quilting.

I just made my first Rag Quilt and decided to clip as I sewed. I clipped after each join, then clipped each long row. It sure saved my hand!

Your quilt is adorable and he will love it.  It will continue to soften as it is washed.  Couple of tips... Flannel shrinks a lot and Minky/Cuddle does not shrink so you may want to prewash the flannel or leave the Minky for another project.  I recommend washing the first time in a commercial washer/dryer. It will save the mess in the house and not put so much lint in your home machine.  For the girl's quilt, instead of adding extra rows that will require all that extra snipping, you could just size up your squares. May use a 12 inch instead of an 8 inch square.  Another option for future rag quilts is to eliminate the batting if you are going to use the Minky fabric. The Minky is thick enough to double as batting and gives it enough padding to be warm.  You would end up with a layer of prewashed flannel over a layer of Minky which will make the quilt more subtle and soft.  My biggest suggestion, if you are planning to make a bunch of rag quilts, is to invest in a AccuQuilt GO! quilt cutting machine and the die that cuts the rag quilt squares.  Then the only thing you have to do is sew them together.  All the cutting is done for you when you pass the fabric sandwich through the machine. Of course, like anything these days, they are pricy, but good tools always are.  The most important thing is to ENJOY what you are doing and continue to learn from each project. I've done several rag quilts.  They are very nice when you get them done.  I agree with the spring loaded scissors.  They make a huge difference.  Yours turned out gorgeous.

We have done these with our 4H kids and they are so fun. I highly recommend a rag quilt snips. Hopefully they still make them! I think it was Fiskars. Wash a couple times before you dry it, that will help with the shedding. This turned out very nice

I've made lots of rag projects over the years....the hardest and most time consuming part is all the snipping!  Lol.  So much fun to make.  My favorite is making rag totes!  ❤  Love how yours turned out May May!  Also if you're making them out of flannel... just skip the batting, It'll still be cozy and warm without being so stiff.  Much more pliable. Easier to tuck in around car seats etc.  ❤😃

You could quilt each block differently to add more fun for the sewing. Or free motion quilt the blocks for practice. Great tutorial.

I use my walking foot when sewing with minke.   Adorable. I might have to try making a rag quilt.

I use flannel instead of batting and I think it’s softer.  Spring loaded snips are the way to go!!

I love to make rag quilts. They are a  lot of fun, especially using lots of different colors. Sniping the edges makes your hands tired.

I did my fist rag quilt this year and I loved it, so I made 3 more and 2 ready to go!!!
