Welcome to Shenkeng, a town in New Taipei City, Taiwan.
Along its historic old street, you’ll find tofu restaurants everywhere, making Shenkeng one of Taiwan’s best-known “tofu towns.”
And its most famous specialty is, of course, stinky tofu — a dish notorious for its incredibly strong smell.
But just how bad does it actually smell?
And why did this town become so closely associated with tofu in the first place?
In this video, I walk through Shenkeng Old Street, explore the town’s history, and try everything from fried stinky tofu and spicy mala stinky tofu to tofu-based desserts.
Interestingly, Shenkeng did not originally prosper because of tofu.
The town once developed through transportation along the Jingmei River and the tea trade. During the Japanese colonial period, it also served for a time as an administrative center for the surrounding area.
Later, as its transportation and administrative importance declined, Shenkeng gradually lost much of its former prosperity.
So how did this declining town reinvent itself as the famous “tofu town” that attracts so many visitors today?
There’s much more to Shenkeng than just stinky tofu.

最初に揚げのほうを食べたお店！懐かしいです、私もこのお店に行きましたｗｗ
そして麻辣臭豆腐も他のお店で食べました＾＾
歴史を調べてなかったので、昔はお茶の街だったとはびっくりしました！
深坑老街を訪れた際には、動画の冒頭にも映っていた「味の豆腐」で、揚げ臭豆腐のほか、数種類の料理をいただきました。臭豆腐に限らず、料理店としてのレベルの高さを感じました。
最後の、老闆娘（？）とのやり取りのシーンも印象的でした。私も、あのように台湾の人たちとたくさん触れ合いながら旅をするのが理想です😃
但如果我不會餓，沒有想吃東西時，進到一個空間裡面有人在吃臭豆腐，那個氣味我會覺得不舒服
不過我吃過最好吃的臭豆腐是接近生的臭豆腐，涼拌的，整塊白白的，不是炸的也沒有醬料，看起來很平淡，味道極其強烈，在朋友家吃的，也是我第一次吃 涼拌的臭豆腐
炸的只是在外面吃很方便. 深坑現在位置也離動物園很近, 就可以逛完再順路外帶湯的.
通リ全体が臭豆腐の匂いで充満していて、最後は麻痺していたかも😅
当然、臭豆腐を夕食に食べましたが、意外に食べれましたが、
未だに好物にはなれません🤣
