THIS EPISODE: How to Analyse Editing

In this lesson, we dig into one of the most powerful — and often invisible — tools in filmmaking: editing. You’ll learn how meaning is created between shots, and why the cut is the single most important device in film language.

We trace editing from its origins in early cinema — when filmmakers first discovered they could interrupt a shot — through the breakthroughs of pioneers like George Albert Smith and Edwin S. Porter, all the way to the conceptual leap known as the Kuleshov Effect. By the end, you’ll understand why every edit is a decision that shapes how we read a scene.

You’ll explore the two major approaches to editing:
1. Continuity Editing — match-on-action, eyeline match, shot/reverse shot, crosscutting, the 180 and 30 degree rules, and the use of establishing shots to create seamless, intuitive storytelling.
2. Expressive Editing — jump cuts, smash cuts, montage, and techniques that deliberately draw attention to the cut to make meaning through contrast, rhythm, and juxtaposition.

We’ll also look closely at cutting tempo, and how the rhythm of editing can build tension, heighten emotion, or shift the energy of a scene — from fast-paced chaos to slow, suffocating stillness. And finally, we’ll talk about the rare but powerful continuous shot, where filmmakers remove the cut entirely for maximum impact.

You’ll finish with a clear, practical framework for applying all of this to your own analysis using the Three Ts: Tone, Tempo, Technique — perfect for essays, exams, and sharpening your critical eye.
