After inspecting all gears, bearings, dog, balls, I need to replace 4 new needle bearings and seals. Without using a tool, I figure-pressed one ball in first ball in the dog, then next ball, push dog into the ditch. I managed put in the shaft and link cradle in, then lock cradle with the screw pin, push dog in forward gear, connect hook, thread in short shift shaft......

Thanks you! I ended up using the roll from a cricket machine paper. It was a an exact fit! Didn’t have to you the the metal on the side!

Your vid is the best, the metal shaving part is soo telling. I am dealing with a 96 30hp seized dry gearcase, could be super rusty. No idea why the there is no oil at all in gearcase. I poured tranny oil and WD40 to soak it now, hopefully loosen it.

Silvers74 . Still around YouTube? I bought tool and used on 20 hp johnson but now I can't maneuver the reverse gear past the shift link.

Getting ready to tear my 35 Evinrude lower unit apart. So far I think it may just be the clutch dog but I will know more once I disassemble it. I am a huge fan of MacGyver type stuff! I would have tried to figure out a tool so I didn't have to spend $70 to do this repair. thanks for saving me the time. This will be my first lower unit so I appreciate your tips. Thanks

Did you have to pull the powerhead to get the water pipe reconnected??? Mine came out with the lower.
