Tune ANY Snare Easily and Quickly

Today I'm going through the extremely simple method I use 90% of the time to tune snares. It's extremely quick and effective and avoids most of the frustration that comes with fine tuning.

*Note - this video almost entirely ignores most conventional tuning advice and relies heavily on "feel". I understand this is something that doesn't translate over video and comes with experience. Practice often, use the pitch references I give, and you should be setting up your snares within a minute before long.

Snare was recorded with a single overhead mic, same as what's picking up my voice.

@synthesizers pointed out the probable issue with the bottom head Tune Bot reading - I was unaware that the Tune Bot Gig (my version) doesn't go above 400hz, which is likely closer to what the bottom head reading should be. If you use a Tune Bot, be aware that you need a version that goes higher than 400hz for the bottom head.

Great tips, thank you. I agree that it's the feel of the tension in the key in the hand that's important. Also, if I may, drummers should try the snares set a little looser as well, check out that sound too. Cheers.

Sounds like this has been mentioned but you’ll want the tube bot studio for a snare if you want to tune the bottom head like this. You will need to turn on the high range mode and likely still filter out the 200-300 hz range to get a solid reading.

Pretty sure the reso head is not 188hz, more around the 400. Keep in mind that old tune bots don’t go above 400 and new ones need to be set to support it. Most probably you are above 400 and the tune bot went crazy ;)

Tunebot lies on the snare side head. And if you don't have the tune bot with the HF button on it then it lies even more.

I run a recording studio and see a lot of snare drums come through. Sometimes no amount of fussing will work - if I see a Remo dot or Evans reverse dot come in, I am immediately on high alert. If I can’t get that snare to behave I will see if the drummer will allow me to put on a coated ambassador or an Evans Dry head. Often, problem solved. Just my experience. YMMV

Woaw, sorry i dig your snare sound but your explanation/methodology is terrible. I say that because if young drummers or beginners want to follow this, they have to be warned.
