I sat down with Paul Millerd (author of The Pathless Path and Good Work) to break down a 10-step roadmap for quitting the default path without needing some perfect master plan, from running the numbers to dealing with the shame and fear that comes up. Hope you enjoy xx

The saddest thing isn’t being stuck in a job you hate. It’s realizing years later that fear made the decision for you.

I’ve been in tech for 13 years, the golden handcuffs are real, and I’m miserable and have been for years. I’ve always wanted to invent, and have dozens of invention ideas in notes on my phone going back 13 years. 4 months ago I learned how to use CAD, bought a 3D printer, and chose one idea to bring to reality. It’s difficult and I’m burning the candle at both ends (I’m also a father of 4) but I finally feel like I found my calling. Sometimes the pain of doing the same thing is greater than the pain of learning something new. That new skill could be the path to a future you’ve always imagined (not necessarily in $$, in contentment) - I’m not sure where this new path will take me, but I know with confidence that I can succeed.

53:39 you’re so real for saying this. I agree. My goal isn’t to be wealthy. I want to be comfortable and to be able to do things I enjoy, or that bring me joy and maybe also earn me money.

Ps the AI fatigue is for real 😅

I quit my job about 2 months ago, after nearly 18 years without a plan to start this online journey. I must say his book (Pathless Path) also had some influence. Ali, I also attended one of your courses (the 1k challenge). I’m still figuring it out at 45. I gave myself permission to try this for some months. I’m enjoying the journey, so much to learn.

1:04:32 He may be in the bottom 1% from his business classmates, but he’s probably a lot happier, healthier and more fulfilled 😊

The most interesting thing is, every Creative I’ve ever met, just wants to do make things, most of them don’t really want to build a business and/or manage a team. Really interesting convo.

This is a great and relatable conversation, many thanks ⭐Securing a sound client base sounds really hard, though, especially if one quits looking for employment because one begins to wonder if one is employable, or if one doubts that one's skills are actually marketable, no matter what one learns (technical, artistic, analytical, or otherwise).

Paul and Ali are two of the most inspiring people right now. I officially start the pathless path on July 15th and these types of conversations help me overcome my doubts and all of the naysayers in my life.

@lisamarie2456 3 months ago

Thanks Ali, unfortunately I couldn't live off 25% of my salary. I'm still figuring out what I want in my career.

I am one of those people who make less money amongst friends. Yes, sometimes I wonder if I am different, like them, would I love my life? But at the end of the day, I am happy where I am right now. 😊

I was a wedding photographer full time, my parents would bug me to get a “real job” I got my CDL and started truck driving. I’ve been stuck for 3 years and they have been some of the most miserable 3 years of my life. My spark has left I’m constantly angry and I’m overweight. This year I’m finally making that change and going back to what I love doing.
