I just let them roam in my banana forest

I'm going to convert my compost pile this weekend

We have 2 acres of solid clay. It's a challenge to get things to grow. I was free ranging our hens but they were digging up freshly planted plants and eating plants I was trying to establish for our own benefit as well as thiers. So I've been forced to put up a run. We are retired and living in Costa Rica so plants are different here. I'm learning about them as much as I can. I've been cutting banana leaves for them but have to stop for awhile or the banana plants will be no more. I'm giving them noni leaves as well. I am interested in setting up a soldier fly box. It looks pretty simple. Tons of soldier flies here. I'm very interested in compost to change the hard packed clay into something that will grow food for us all. It's our winter here and the girls have been going through a molt. We have 10 hens at the moment. Some are done and egg count is back up to 6-7 a day from 1. A few are still in molt. For awhile it looked like we had run the girls over with the lawn mower. There were feathers everywhere and hens standing around almost naked. They looked so pathetic, poor things. A few still looking that way.
I'll get some seeds for those plants and get going on that. The feed here is crushed corn. Nothing more. So I'm looking to make sure my ladies have all they need. Thankyou for all the information. ❤❤❤❤

Thank you for making this clear and understandable. I really need to set this up. One way I've been providing free feed and shade for my hens is planting, or letting wild plants grow in the run by adding little wire fences in a circle here and there. The wild lettuce, sunflowers and other plants grow tall and they nibble on the leaves. I cut off the spent sunflowers and they stay busy trying to get the seeds out. I'd like to know how to dry the BSF larvae for storage. It gets too cold here to grow them in the winter.

Thank 😊

Congratulations

My biggest problem is to. Buy feed every month for chiekens

I'm getting old and can't do the lifting that I used to.

I like the video. Thanks a lot. Now the challenge I’m facing is how to deal with the domestic flies that invite themselves to the party before the BSF?

I feed a high pro chicken feed. Scratch has very little corn Anna, but my chickens don't eat the corn. I do give them soldier worms

i saw a video that says black soldier flies do not live in countries that experience long and /or  ling periods of cold/snow, it needs warmth and heat. he used local flies in summer and dried the larve for winter months.

Well, I haven't really tried to make a profit. Costa fee does get me alright. Alright, and I got 30, maybe 30 chickens. And I get about dozens eggs a day, 6- twelve a day

Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

When its cheaoer to buy i quit . But im going to do it differently im going to build the systems first then get animals

So you can't grow these in a call klammer, right like in colorado

My biggest challenge is fear of keeping chicken as feed is costly with less or no income

Yes.
The biggest challenge is paying for Fred every week and not making a profit.
The other one is sickness of birds especially in winter

just another STUPID...time consuming... keep you watching ...the video much longer than needed AI created junk

My challenge is egg loss. Went from 36 daily to 5 daily.  Also feather loss, yes they have been wormed and dust bath

Whut's wit tha speling?
