First time hearing this song:
"This is pretty good."
Hundredth time hearing it:
"WHITE WHALE HOLY GRAIL"

the most insane thing about mastodon's drummer is that he's actually the lead singer on some of their songs. listen to oblivion please

@Nursesaids 5 years ago

The snare rolls are so evocative of a ship rolling on the waves its uncanny.

A lot of songs just take titles or characters from popular culture and then make nothing about them in the song, but what I love about this one is how it captures the essence of Ahab's insanity in audio form. His obsession, his rage against the white whale. Instead of stealing, it adds to the appreciation of the character

Oblivion is personally my favorite song by them. They have three different people singing on it

You can always tell when Brann is behind a kit. One of the busiest, tightest drummers around

Hearts Alive; Hearts Alive; HEARTS ALIVE! Just epic.

More MASTODON! More MASTODON!
And then throw in a BARONESS song while you’re at it.
Also BLOOD AND THUNDER live, in person, is an experience.

Such an iconic riff and song. Makes everyone lose their shit, every time.

"Heart's Alive" all day. The epic masterpiece of the Leviathan album. Drum chops for miles and a banjo-technique guitar solo that is sure to amaze. Goosebumps galore.

The Czar by them is incredible. But really anything from Crack the Skye. One of the greatest metal albums of the 2000s

@mayqueenslithers4078 5 years ago

You gotta do The Last Baron by them. One of my favorites.

One of the most interesting things, to me, about the guitarist is that he actually learned to play banjo before guitar. Letting that in mind, you can actually hear that stylistic influence in his play. It brings a very cool unique and unconventional sound to the band

I always describe Brann Dailor as a drum fill that gained sentience.

This song was my 1st experience with Mastodon. When you did Show Yourself as your first Mastodon track, I couldn't help but hope you went back to something from Leviathan or Blood Mountain.

Being a surfer you should really appreciate the watery musicality to this whole album. In particular the middle section in this song always conjures images of ocean swell, turbulent surface movements with deep currents underneath. God there are so many great Mastodon songs to do.

Your channel makes me happy.. 37 year old metal head and I love listening to you break it down...

Here we go! Crack the Skye, another great Mastodon track.

Brann is an amazing drummer, one of the best in the business. And even more impressive is that he does vocals on a ton of tracks. In fact, there's no "lead singer" in Mastodon. Troy Sanders (bass) and Brent Hinds (guitar), all contribute their own voices to the music. And boy, do I love these early tracks from them (this was the album that introduced me to them). They sound like a bunch of angry, drunk sailors. Appropriate, since the album itself is based on Moby Dick. But you'll get to hear an amazing evolution of their voices, and the overall music, as you dig into more of their stuff.
