Back in The Squad! Nuno Makes Edson Álvarez U-Turn After West Ham Reject €15m Bid

West Ham rejected a €15m offer for Edson Álvarez this summer before changing their transfer stance — only to discover it was too late to resurrect the deal.

Olympiacos offered €10m plus a further €5m in add-ons for the Mexican midfielder, but West Ham initially decided the bid was too low.
The Hammers subsequently reassessed their valuation and went back to Olympiacos, only to discover the Greek club had already moved on.
That failed transfer has now handed Álvarez an unexpected second chance at West Ham.

He's back training with Nuno Espírito Santo's squad and Gonzo has been told by an agent involved in Álvarez's previous move to Fenerbahçe that Nuno “really likes him” and is happy for him to stay.
From surplus to requirements and almost sold for €15m to potentially becoming part of Nuno's plans again — Gonzo looks at the remarkable turnaround in Edson Álvarez's West Ham career.

He could be a huge player for us this season. Crying out for a leader, Alvarez is that man.

As a United States fan I watch Mexico at least once a year and sometimes up to 3 times a year in both nations league and our gold cup games. When people suggested he played center back for Mexico I went to look it up, because in games against the United States he has largely if not always played primarily at midfield. During the world cup he was played at center back rather than in the midfield. This has not been the norm for most of his Mexico career.

We should play 3 at the back and have a defensive midfielder to support them.

2:44 strange that the caption write Said Benrahma when you said Tobido

I remember us last season in the pre season I saw Alvarez warming up. He didn’t look happy because maybe he knew potter didn’t want him. He did look at me and gave me a smile when I said his name. Bring him back in

With Alvarez, Soucek and Magassa as well as Engels, Makasu, Kante and Orford we must have the best squad depth in midfield in the Championship

@ariliimatainen5983 3 days ago

Our team getting better by day even without new signings. Surely rest of the teams in championship are scratching there heads.

Hopefully this means going forward, Nuno will consider playing 433 or 4231 in some matches and actually include a DMF.

"Edson Álvarez has received a total of 19 yellow cards and 1 red card in the Premier League, plus 1 red card in the EFL Cup during his West Ham Career" So In 59 games 37 of those he hasn't even been booked! So he is hardly a "walking-red-card" that is trotted out endlessly! He's a quality player (even more so in the Championship) with just the sort of required determination and leadership we need in this current division and cover at Cente Half is a bonus as well

@curtisalleyne3710 1 day ago

Long as he doesn't kidnap the squad 😂

@colinadams9070 3 days ago

I said this weeks ago that he will be brought back into the squad and he will be played as a CB.

I was told this!

Then he will become Vice Captain to Bowen

My main concern with Alvarez is how much of a liability he is to get booked then sent off. Tactically, I think adding a defensive midfielder, going 4-5-1 or 4-3-3 helps the full backs push on without necessarily having to sprint back immediately. So it could actually help us in attack.
