I Made a 1930s Jacket Out of Reindeer

There's about 2000 Reindeer jackets made each year. In this video I set out to make a jacket from one of the most limited and sustainable leathers in the world, Reindeer.

These hides come from reindeer herded by the Sámi in northern Sweden. The animals live almost completely free, migrating naturally between the mountains in summer and the forests or coastal areas in winter. Because they live wild, most hides become scratched or weathered, meaning only a small portion can be turned into leather.

This was equal parts nerve-wracking and incredibly rewarding, and I’m excited to share the process with you.

For some reason it made me think back on my Dad's moose hide jacket. He harvested a moose when he lived in Edmonton, Alberta, early 60's. He took the unsplit tanned hide back to Germany and had a custom jacket made. When he went to pick it up the tailor told him to never bring a moose hide back to him because it was hard to work with and he broke many needles. The jacket was heavy and warm.

I think the jacket would have been a lot more classic and wearable if the whole thing was made from the reindeer hide. That fur makes it look like a costume pilots jacket. But very nice leather hide for sure

I didn't know this was the traditional way to sew, I just do my patterns this exact way because it feels most natural to me. I am just a sewing enthusiast and self-taught as well. I have books and use tutorials to learn about proper techniques, but it's hard to find videos that showcase a full garment production and are easy to follow along. Yours was a breeze to watch and I also felt well-entertained and learned from it. I just got a sewing machine that's meant to be able to sew heavier fabrics and leather. I am going to test that out as soon as I got proper yarn and hardware. I'm never afraid of a challenging project.

I studied fashion and when we were preparing our end of course fashion show I decided I wanted leather. This was the early 70's, no internet ! I contacted a clothing magazine and asked for names and I wrote to one and asked if they could give me a quote for some fine, soft caramel coloured leather. Instead of a quote they sent me a HUGE crate of skins, several ENORMOUS and superbe. Cowhides. In one skin I made trousers with a draw string waist and there was still some left over. My teachers were amazed and asked me how I got it, I replied that I ASKED ! I was also given for pennies all the linen fabric for the jackets and coats and the silks I found in a tiny shop selling off factory stock. My whole collection cost me only a few pounds.
