On March 9-10, 1945, 279 B-29 bombers dropped 1,665 tons of incendiaries on Tokyo in Operation Meetinghouse—the single most destructive air attack in human history. 83,793 people died. 16 square miles of the city vanished. More destructive than Dresden, Hiroshima, or Nagasaki combined.
This is the story told through the eyes of the Japanese generals who watched it happen. General Shizuichi Tanaka commanded Tokyo's defense. Lieutenant General Masakazu Kawabe controlled Japan's air forces. They knew their plan was inadequate. They knew the 1939 fire study had warned this could not be stopped. And when Curtis LeMay changed American doctrine overnight—stripping guns, flying low, bombing at night—they could only watch as the city burned.
This documentary uses only verified historical facts, military records, and declassified reports. No dramatization. No speculation. Just what actually happened, told minute by minute.
