■ 71-year-old Kang Young-hee began caring for her son six years ago after he suffered a sudden heart attack. Although her son miraculously survived, he became unable to do anything on his own due to brain damage. This video portrays the reality of a family caregiver who endures alone, sacrificing sleep while tending to a son who has grown taller than himself, and whose own health has been ruined because they cannot afford the daily caregiver costs of 120,000 to 150,000 won.

Grandmother Choi Soon-ok, who has been caring for her husband with dementia for 10 years, also sold her house to pay for hospital bills before eventually taking on the caregiving herself; however, she continues to suffer amidst constant tension and depression 24 hours a day. As such, families who suddenly become "hidden patients" are sometimes driven to tragedies such as extreme caregiver homicides and suicides amidst the burden of caregiving costs exceeding 3 million won per month and a life of endless struggle against the illness. While the average life expectancy of the Korean people reaches 83.7 years, the "healthy life expectancy"—the period of living without illness—remains at approximately 70 to 72 years. This means that the last 10 years or more of life must be spent relying on caregiving. Although support measures such as integrated nursing and caregiving services are in place, the participation rate in hospital beds remains in the 30% range, leaving the majority of the elderly neglected in welfare blind spots. Now that we have entered a super-aged society, we warn that the suffering of caregiving is no longer a burden on an individual or family, but an urgent issue that our entire society must address.
