This scene is an AI adaptation of the final pages of Prisoner of the Daleks, a novel written by Trevor Baxendale, a must-read for any fan of the RTD-era Dalek stories.
Plot Summary:
Trapped in the middle of humanity's war against the Daleks, the Doctor joins a crew of bounty hunters to stop a terrifying plot to rewrite history and erase the human race from existence. The mission leads them into the clutches of the feared Dalek Inquisitor General, known simply as Dalek X, and costs the crew a devastating price. Now, with Dalek X defeated and his flagship destroyed, the Doctor has one last visit to make.
Description:
This is something I have wanted to make for a very long time, and only recently has the technology been good enough to attempt it. This is AI video pushed to its limits, we've all seen the memes and the slop. It's easy to make a silly or crazy scene, but to produce a fully realised, two-handed piece of drama that works from start to finish is still a genuinely difficult feat. Some of the results I have achieved with this scene have genuinely blown me away. I have really pushed the AI to deliver what amounts to a real acting performance, aided by very sparse music, a deliberate choice.
I have always loved Prisoner of the Daleks and always knew I wanted to adapt this scene in some form, so it felt right that this should be my first serious attempt. I have spent a significant amount of time and effort putting this together, trying to capture the look and feel of 2009-era Doctor Who as accurately as possible.
Don't let the two big "AI" letters fool you into thinking there was no manual work or effort involved, far from it. I intend to do a follow-up video going into more detail, but to name a few things: all of Dalek X's indicator lights were animated by hand and had to be made to look as photorealistic as possible, making every shot featuring his dome lights a complicated VFX shot. I also created the TARDIS materialisation effect, as well as extensive clean-up work on some of the more unusual AI visual quirks. As well as all the sound design.
I wanted to present this as though it were a lost 2009 special episode, sitting somewhere between Planet of the Dead and The Waters of Mars.
Cast:
The Doctor — David Tennant (AI generated performance)
Dalek X — Nicholas Briggs (voice taken from the original audiobook)
I hope I have succeeded in what I set out to do, and I really hope you enjoy it.
