What I don't like about clothing today is so much of it is synthetic materials. They look cheap, don't breath as well as natural fibers, are bad for the environment, potentially bad for your health and companies still charge a premium price for cheap clothing.

My son tested this as a teen.  Wore a suit to the mall and was amazed at the reactions.

As someone who used to teach English in Japan and had to wear a suit everyday, I am looking forward to slowly but surely rebuilding my suit collection again.

There is an American class system: the only difference is that the American working class has been bamboozled into thinking that there isn't.

I love the way people dressed in the 40's and 50's, love the music, the movies and people knew how to conduct themselves, it was a time of innovation, industrious and the gateway to a better future!

I personally don’t like plastic in fabric as it breaks down fast enough to make the piece look cheap after two washes, but not fast enough as it ends up trapped in our water supply. There are ways to have comfort with natural fibers. All you have to do is decide how you’ll cut and sew the project.

“Status” isn’t the healthiest way to think about this. It’s more constructive to see clothing as a means of expressing excellence. That’s a values-based system, rather than an incentives-based one.
Excellent things are generally beautiful, meaningful, or uplifting. When you dress well, you raise the tone of the room—not by asserting superiority, but by broadcasting an aura of excellence that benefits everyone.
In this sense, what people call “status” is really just a by-product of earned excellence. And that’s a much healthier foundation to build on.

Being a military brat , I was overseas as a kid and everyone in Europe dressed nicely in the 90s, y2k. In America when I would visit, black culture and “street” wear was taking over

I met a few guys that said that they dont care what people say how they dress. And that they just like fun colors and patterns.

Im a big, tall guy bald head beard normally at work dressed all in black. i get treated differently when im not working and   wearing shirt tie waistcoat blazer people dont avoid me 😂👊🇬🇧

I hate garbage clothes I see many guys wear. Sure, I wear some at home because it's loose and in my home, but never out. I wear good looking stuff even if its uncomfortable a bit. I hated seeing guys wearing ripped clothes (purposely ripped) and swear words on shirts. I was like, "what kind of etiquette is that. However me dressing nice made guys call me "an old school loser".

Change the way you dress if it makes you feel better about yourself. But if you have to feel better about yourself by changing your clothing then you've got some other issues to deal with.

As a history buff,  your statement that a " class system" never exited  in the US is false. While not as overt as in Europe - our movies (up to the 70's) reflect that fact.  Regarding clothing, Americans are the worst dressed "hands down"  in the Western World which began in conjunction with the rise of Rap Music. I recall a trip to Europe during this period, where a local  asked me " Do Americans wear only sweat suits?"  Even at fine restaurants you would see the American couple with their coordinated sweatpants and matching top.

So glad you said some of the things you did.

Hence the old saying, "The clothes man the man"; because it indicated their station in society.

In the UK and I imagine parts of Europe, men's hats were definitely a true indicator of status.  Even in the first 60 years of the 20th c, only Bank Managers and equal positions wore bowler hats.  Middle, working class wore Fedoras.  The rest wore wool caps.  The 19th c had the top hat of course which out ranked everyone.  By the way, as a very young person working in a corporate mail room, I was once offered an immediate interview (without warning) in a company for a much higher position.  I was told I got the job in part because I was already dressed for the job to be and not the position I was in.

Music and tieing the movie together is sooo true

I can't really speak in rich circles but dressing with status I see is someone self exalting their birth luck

Yours is a Great channel  very well presented  ❤

In the 50's men were forced to dress up because of societal pressures and often because of their job, it was almost unheard of for a man to walk around without a fedora outdoors back then. Jeans and teeshirts were often relegated to navy men, shipyard workers, goldminers and hobos.
Now the societal pressure has shifted more to comfort. People are so used to relaxed outfits these days that nobody bats an eye. These days there are far more lax workplace dresscodes and far less men physically in a workplaces (a lot of jobs involve working from home on Zoom calls)  Plus a lot of men these days find comfort is an issue. 3-piece suits, though a suit may have a very striking and handsome appearance, are often very restrictive (especially the tie).
Sure, suits are great and I love seeing film of the 40's and 50's for what it is, and I enjoy how dapper the aesthetic was at the time... but realistically it comes down to comfort and convenience of jeans, teeshirts, hoodies and sneakers. Jeans have 4 - 5 pockets, while dress pants only have 2 or 3 (and often times no pockets at all). Sneakers have sure-grip waffles on the sole, while dress shoes have a slippery non-waffled soles with little to no resistance -- making running almost impossible and hence more dangerous and frustrating (especially if trying to run for a bus or running zigzag maneuvers out of the path of a speeding car...) Teeshirts are extremely easy to put on and remove without the need to fiddle with any buttons or collars or cuffs.
In the end it all comes down to comfort and not caring what others think. Different people enjoy different levels of comfort.. and suits are very expensive so I think that's also an issue. Most people have found it's necessary to buy food rather than improve their wardrobe... especially in the economic state of the world in 2025. Generally now it's just the wealthy dressing to the nines -- and the less-wealthy folks forced to wear suits in workplaces / weddings / funerals...
