I'm Dale, twenty-eight years on the bench — twelve of them on the GM dealer side, watching delivery after delivery. The salesman pairs a phone, shows the cupholders, hands over the keys. Nobody has time to show you what the truck actually does.

These are 15 functions 99% of owners never touch. And this isn't a list for brand-new trucks only — some of these go back twenty years, and I flag which era each one applies to.

Counting down:

1️⃣5️⃣ GLOBAL WINDOW ROLL-DOWN — Hold unlock on the fob and every window drops. Vents a scorching cab before you get in. Goes back multiple generations. ⚠️ Honest note: you generally CAN'T put them back up from the fob on these trucks — that's deliberate, for safety. So don't walk away assuming the fob will close them.

1️⃣4️⃣ THE REST OF WHAT YOUR FOB DOES — Power-fold mirrors, power tailgate (and you can stop it mid-travel by pressing again), and silent panic mode on some models.

1️⃣3️⃣ REMOTE START DOES MORE THAN START IT — Climate comes on with your last settings, and below a certain temp the heated seats, heated wheel and defrosters can activate automatically. ⚠️ Myth corrected: opening a door does NOT shut a GM remote start down. What stops it is the timer, the brake pedal, or the truck detecting a problem. It runs the engine, not the ignition — doors locked, steering locked, shifter won't leave Park until someone's inside with the key. You get two cycles.

1️⃣2️⃣ RETAINED ACCESSORY POWER — Radio, windows and outlets stay live after shutdown until you open a door. Plus battery saver / load shedding, which isn't a malfunction — it's the truck protecting your battery.

1️⃣1️⃣ THE PERSONALIZATION MENU — Unlock behavior, approach lighting, startup volume, auto-lock, memory seats. It's in the driver information center under vehicle settings. (No fake button sequences here — the menu changes by year and trim.)

1️⃣0️⃣ THE HIDDEN INFO PAGES — Real numbers, not warning lights: oil pressure in PSI, battery voltage, coolant temp, instant fuel economy. A light tells you something already broke. A number tells you what's changing.

9️⃣ TRANSMISSION FLUID TEMPERATURE — If you tow, the single most valuable number on this list. Heat kills transmissions. Watch it climbing a grade and back off before you cook the fluid. No screen for it? A cheap code reader pulls it live.

8️⃣ WHAT THE OIL LIFE MONITOR ACTUALLY IS — Not a mileage countdown. An algorithm reading revolutions, temperature, run time and conditions. That's why two identical trucks show different percentages. Honest advice: if you tow, idle, or do short trips, change earlier than it says.

7️⃣ TAP SHIFT / GEAR LIMITING — Cap the top gear. On a long descent the engine holds you back instead of your brakes. On rolling terrain it stops the transmission hunting.

6️⃣ AUTO GRADE BRAKING — The truck downshifts itself on a hill to hold your speed. Owners think the transmission is failing. It's the feature working, and it's saving your brakes.

5️⃣ WHAT TOW/HAUL REALLY DOES — It does NOT add power. It changes shift points, makes shifts firmer, and turns on grade braking. ⚠️ Those firm shifts are the POINT — less clutch slip means less heat. Use it when there's weight behind you.

4️⃣ 4WD AUTO MODE — Sends torque to the front automatically when it detects slip, so you can run it on mixed conditions. ⚠️ 4-High locks the axles together and is NOT for dry pavement — that's how you bind a transfer case.

3️⃣ TEEN DRIVER / VALET MODE — Volume caps, audio muted until belts are buckled, and a report card with top speed and hard-braking events. Valet locks the glovebox and console with a PIN.

2️⃣ THE TRAILERING & CAMERA SUITE (newer trucks) — Saved trailer profiles, a pre-departure light check you can do alone, trailer tire pressure AND temperature, brake gain, hitch guidance, bed view, transparent trailer view.

1️⃣ G80 — YOU MIGHT ALREADY HAVE A LOCKING DIFFERENTIAL — No button. No switch. No light. It just works when a wheel spins. That's why nobody knows they have it. Open your glovebox, find the RPO sticker, and scan it for G80. If it's there, you own a locking rear differential — and you've been driving on traction you never knew about.

The RPO sticker tells you what you actually have — not the trim badge, not the brochure, not what the salesman said.

Go try three of these today. Which one did you not know about? Drop it in the comments.
