How did the United States become the world's greatest economic power? For decades, the dollar dominated international trade, Wall Street financed corporations and governments, American industry led innovation, and the U.S. occupied the center of the global economic order. But to understand the rise of the United States—and the challenges this power faces today—it is necessary to go back to the origins of the so-called American machine.

In this episode of AUVP Doc, Antônio Bôco goes back to 1945 to show how the end of World War II changed the distribution of power on the planet. While Europe and Japan were devastated by the conflict, the United States ended the war with factories functioning, enormous capital reserves, military capacity, and an unprecedented productive structure. But this advantage did not arise suddenly.

Geography, natural resources, immigration, institutions, private property, and a huge consumer market helped create the conditions for the industrialization of the United States. Railroads integrated the territory, entrepreneurs like Rockefeller, Carnegie, J.P. Morgan, and Henry Ford transformed entire sectors of the economy, and a combination of private capital, technology, and scale gave rise to an industrial powerhouse.

The two world wars further accelerated this transformation. While the old European powers spent resources and destroyed part of their productive capacity, the United States expanded its industry and financial importance. Gradually, the center of international finance began to shift from London to New York, preparing the ground for an even greater change in the world economy.

In Bretton Woods, this transformation gained an institutional architecture. The dollar assumed a central role in the international monetary system, while institutions like the IMF and the World Bank helped structure the new economic order. Added to American military, diplomatic, technological, and cultural influence, these mechanisms transformed the United States into a power with a global presence very different from the old colonial empires.

But no power remains at the top simply because it got there. Based on Ray Dalio's theory of large business cycles, this episode shows why growth, wealth, innovation, debt, rivalry, and political choices can alter the destiny of major powers. Understanding these cycles isn't about predicting the future with certainty, but about seeing the world and markets with more context.
