From brutal temperatures and freezing winds to massive snowfall, buried driveways, and lake-effect snow, these Brits quickly discovered that American winters can be on a completely different level.

One Brit compares Boston's winter to “beautiful but brutal,” while another experiences Michigan temperatures so cold she says she has lost all feeling in her body. Others are shocked by how Americans simply carry on with everyday life in the snow.

But eventually, some of them discover another side of American winter — skiing, snow-covered mountains, cozy cabins, frozen lakes, and the beauty of New England.

I a native Texan and I once had to go to Illinois for a month during the winter. I was walking in knee deep snow wearing a ski mask to keep from freezing my face as I held a portfolio case to keep the wind from hitting me it was brutally cold. And I know there are parts of the United States that are even worse.

I lived in Leadville, Colorado, U.S.A., the highest incorporated city in the world at 10,200 feet (well above 2 miles above sea level), and the mountains go up from the valley. The high temperature in summer was about 74F. (A nice room temperature.) When I woke up before the sun, it was often -20 to -40F. I went out to the woodshed to grab three armfuls of wood (in my pajamas) to stoke the fire so that my spouse and two young children woke up to a nice warm house (I made sure the fire never went out. I lit it exactly one time a year.) If you want cold…I got you covered.

I live in Colorado now but I grew up on the North Dakota-Minnesota border. I remember speding Christmas at my inlaws' lake cabin one year and the high was -0.65 C. That was the HIGH.
My favorite one was when I accidentally popped a seal on my car's right rear tire and had to walk six blocks home. When I got back home I looked at the outdoor thermometer and it was -0.97 C outside.

Try dealing with lake effects here in upstate New York. The weather drops down to negative 20 degrees on a bad day. On a good day it's negative 10 degrees ferenhight

I've lived in Michigan my whole life and I Love winter!!
32° fareinhuit is 0°celcius. That's a midwinter warm up!!
It's only a week or two that it's around zero. Stay moving and wear good, clean socks. Keeping your feet warm is the best first step in enjoying a good winter. A hat or lotsa hair keeps your head warm. And wear a coat to keep you comfortable.

Southwestern PA here. According to the Googles the lowest temp last winter was -11F. It's been much colder than that if you factor in the wind chill (now called the real feel). Add freezing rain, snow on top of the freezing rain and black ice and you have a real party. In other words, a pretty typical winter in much of the northeast.

I live in Milford Delaware which has a temperate climate. I don't think our Winters are cold but we have weeks of 20° weather add a couple of snow storms each winter.

Try Montana. It’s not so much the cold (15 to 40 below zero) it’s the 20 to 50 mile per hour winds.

Somebody was complaining because the temperature. What's 33°F? That's just freezing, honey. That's warm.
Okay, I'm not trying to make fun of you. But you know you do sound funny. I'd probably sound funny if I was in your country too
