In 2008, Antonio Gala (then 78 years old) was experiencing a year marked by the publication of his most personal novel, Los papeles de agua (The Water Papers), and by his presence at cultural events and tributes, in addition to continuing to write columns and appear on television.
• In the autumn of 2008, he presented his new novel, Los papeles de agua (Planeta), in Valencia and Venice. He described it as a “mixture of essay and novel,” featuring a writer protagonist (Deyanira Alarcón) and Venice as the narrative focus.
• In interviews from that time, he defined the book as his “most personal” work and reiterated that “love is life’s greatest success, redeeming everything.”
• In January 2008, he appeared in a video tribute to the King on his 70th birthday, where Gala, along with 70 other prominent figures from the world of culture and society, offered his congratulations.
• • In 2008, he was named an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Fine Arts of Córdoba, one of the accolades listed in his official biography.
