I’ve been collecting & growing cacti for 50 years.
I started growing certain species 40 years ago and now I have greenhouses full of them at 30/40 years of age . I’ve never sold any to the public. This is part of my pension fund next year I’m going to start releasing them.

My Mom's South African. I remember visiting a family friend outside of Cape Town with an extensive plant collection who hid his pachypodium namaquanum (halfmen is what he called it) at a preist's house during divorce precedings with his ex-wife. This was almost 20 years ago and the plant was 1.5 meter tall.

Sme of it has gone a bit crazy.  Astrophytums used to be common as any!! Now expensive . 40 years  ago a large ariocarpus would  be 30 bucks. Now the same plant is hundreds. Good price on yours. The whole market  just amazes me. From Morris Park in the Ozarks, to the land down under,  have a wonderful day!!! Peace, Love, Plants!!!✌️💖🌵🪴🏵🍀💐🌲🥀🌿🌷🌳🌺🌸🌴🌻🌱⚘️🌾🌹🏜😃👍

Unfortunately, cactus prices have gone through the roof since I started to collect them over 25 years ago. But,  I don't mind paying up for cactus that are healthy and maintained well. Thanks for another great video.

I think one other thing folks might not account for wrt Aussie prices is that we can't buy from overseas.  I see a LOT of people in the US and Europe buying houseplants from overseas, and it's expensive shipping-wise, but doable.  Australia has pretty much the strictest import restrictions of any country to protect our wildlife, agriculture and indigenous plants!

Was great to finally meet you at the show mate. The trich monster is going great! Thanks heaps. Appreciate you.

man i wish i lived over there i'd absolutely pick up that ariocarpus and the one with fruits growing so i could sow seeds for hundreds of them lol

I think our prices are better here in the States. I paid $37.89 for my Pachy namaquanum and only $8.67 for my Aloe castilloniae. Pretty much same sizes. I hope you do very well in your sale.

It's also worth mentioning people's mentality on hobbies. For example,  Spain (specially the south, and the Canary islands) are great places to grow cacti, but it's a small hobby niche and it doesn't have a high demand. On the opposite side, people from the US  were getting crazy about rare monstera plants during the Covid lockdown, they were buying "rare" plants to make cuttings and flip them into profit.

What I mean is that cultural factors should also be taken into account in order to put a price tag on a plant too.

It was lovely to see you on Saturday, i got there a bit late but you looked like you had sold heaps. I purchased two from you and iam happy with them , my Ant plant is going great aswell .
Sure was a lot of sellers ......and people there. Looking forward to next weeks video 👍

you’ve got the perfect voice and intonation for audiobooks. oh and i love the plant stuff too

Great video and love the shirt. I thought your prices were very reasonable and I walked away extremely happy after purchasing one of your little Copiapoa griseoviolacea (which is a species I never thought I would be able to afford to buy) at the Society show.

After watching you all morning while drinking my coffee we had to go to the greenhouse. 😂 granted we don’t usually need much of a push. We’ve been on a Stapelia, Orbea and Huernia kick lately. Money is always an issue or I’d have more than I have time to care for. We picked up 4 plants this morning, went grocery shopping, did some math and went back for 2 more plants. 😂

love your comments and insights!  I started during covid growing columnar cacti and was hooked!  watching lots of your videos~greetings from California!

I seem to remember you mentioned you were a teacher… I can see it, to be honest, I learn so much just because of the way you speak/your intonation, I don’t get distracted at all and it’s super easy to follow.

I haven’t been able to pop on an Ariocarpus yet. They’re so expensive and I already have an expensive thorn under my saddle. Copiapoa, I love them. Wish I was younger and had more.

Most of my favorites seem to range from $100-500 for the size I’d like to buy immediately.

My guy!!!!! Started collecting plants end of 2024 and have fully dwelled into the world of cacti and euphorbias and holy shit I gotta say thank you for the content!!!!!! The passion and intellect you put into your words is inspiring

Prices of plants are based on how long you have to hold them for big Nurseries especially in Australia like flower power only take nine weeks and they’ve already have them at the shop ready to sell and that’s why they can sell them so cheap but we’re rare plants like succulents and cacti would take a long time. The price has to be there to compensate of how long it’s taken to grow in the space into looking after it and if it’s a plant you love you’ll just buy it anyway.

Great video!  I think all of these plants are beautiful and interesting.  Prices very fair, especially after I mentally convert to USD(ex: 50.00 AU = 35.00 USD-approximately).  Can’t wait for next week’s video!
