I’m not a car expert, which is exactly why I watch videos like this—to learn. Most car videos feel like marketing or biased opinions, but the best part about this one? I actually learned a lot.

I am a big fan of liquid glass for head gasket leaks.  I have seen it first hand after many weeks of chasing solutions without replacing gaskets / heads / blocks.  It was amazing.

If you're using concentrate, please use distilled water. The last thing you want are a bunch of sediment, minerals and other contaminants floating around in your engine and cooling system. I personally will use the OEM coolant as well instead of taking a chance with generic stuff. Given that coolant lasts a good 60,000+ miles or more, the cost difference is minimal.

I would be on the lookout if you have this done by a shop. I don't like conflict, but I had to ask questions instead of assuming they knew what they were doing. I asked if they were using OEM Toyota long life coolant for my car. They said they were not going to. I insisted they should, and they did. When the day of the flush came, I asked if they were going to use distilled water. They said they were going to use tap water. I sighed, said "hold on a moment" and drove to Walmart a few miles away and came back with 3 gallons of water. They showed me the empty water and coolant jugs.

A few years later I decided not to save a few bucks by going to a quick lube place and went to my typical mechanic. I already knew they use OEM everything if it's available but I asked about if they were going to use distilled water for the 50/50 mix ratio. He looked at me with a puzzled expression and said "of course, why would we want crap floating around in your coolant for the next 5 years?" I smiled and said "never mind". That's the difference between a good mechanic and someone just collecting a paycheck.

Also, like you said, "antifreeze" is a bit of a misnomer. In MN, it routinely gets below freezing and even below 0 F and in the summer 80-100 F days are common. The engine coolant helps keep the engine cool in both situations as it lowers the freezing point AND raises the boiling point. It's amazing stuff!

I remember that viral video on youtube of that guy who never changed his coolant on his Toyota Tacoma pickup and the coolant became so corrosive that it ate right through the cylinder walls of the engine and through the head gasket.  He had to buy a new engine block.  He was pretty sad.  Also you are not supposed to use Dexcool antifreeze.  It eats through the intake manifold gaskets and rubber seals on engines.  Sadly our family had to have the intake manifold gaskets replaced on our Chevy and it was very expensive.

New problem solved:

I diagnosed my own coolant loss. Coolant was leaking into my air intake and peppering all four cylinders. Added coolant UV dye and found dye on the pistons as well as inside the throttle body. Pulled the two hoses from the TB and the IAC valve and joined them together to bypass the leak, either in the IAC valve or an internal crack in the TB casting. Regardless, the coolant loss has stabilized. Ordering a brand new TB that comes with a new IAC valve as well as a new throttle position sensor. Will install it soon.

Great video as always. Thanks so much. I am a total novice but just did a lot of research and changed my coolant on my RAV4. Three other things I would add to this video are: 1. There is three types of coolant: 50/50 (prediluted and ready to use) and concentrate (which needs to water). Concentrate is cheaper and one can buy a gallon of distilled water from the grocery story and mix the concentrate to make 50/50. 2. There are inexpensive plastic burbing funnels to help make sure as much coolant as possible gets in there. Just need to do as this video says and start the engine, let it run, and then turn it off. 3. Best way to confirm put the right amount of coolant in is to compare how much came out and how much was put in.

I only use OEM antifreeze and transmission filters/fluid.

I buy old GM OBS trucks. First thing I do is replace the hoses, water pump, thermostat, radiator, cap, and 50/50 coolant with distilled water. You do not want to kill your transmission or crack the vortec heads.

I worked at a radiator shop. They used to flush with a hose to get the old coolant out, then used distilled water,  then added coolant and the systems fine. The shop gave warranty on their aluminium radiator's,  so i don't think they would do anything wrong to have to people making claims.
I just used distilled water on my mustang and then coolant and its been fine.
My job was to take the radiator apart that needed flushing due to engine rebuilds,  the gasket glue often would clog up radiator's on high performance car's.
The cores that used Toyota red coolant were much cleaner and mazda coolant.
My boss said Toyota's coolant is the best, he had been doing it for 40 year's. I only did 4 year's in the radiator shop.
To fix a leak a good radiator shop will advise you need to replace your radiator, that's oftern cheap for a factory one, rather than making a repair that still can fail eventually.
