Nobody expected him to be there when football said goodbye to Kevin Keegan.
Keegan died on 20 July 2026. He was 75 years old. Many people thought there would be one huge funeral in the North East, full of famous faces. That never happened. His family chose something very different. They held a small, private funeral, far away from the cameras. So football had to find another place to say goodbye. It found one at St James' Park, on the day Newcastle United met Liverpool. Old heroes walked back into the ground. Most of them were men you would expect to see. But one former player had travelled a very long way, much further than most people in the stadium realised.
