Thanks for reminding my depressed arse that I am more "functional" than I think. I do chores, I self care and I get out and touch grass occasionally. I may not meet society's expectations of a fully functional adult because I burned out of crap jobs too many times, but at least my sick self is still trying to some regard.

8:06 i fucking HATE the way bed rotting has been turned into an aesthetic, like no jessica bed rotting isnt relaxing in bed its being in bed for 3 weeks striaght and only getting up to eat and use the bathroom

I was zombified on the wrong Brain Meds for my Bipolar 1 for 6 months and it was a NIGHTMARE. I still bathed, did my work from home job, had a large trash bag to keep my room livable, and remembered to eat/drink water but as soon as my obligations were done, I'd be in my dark bedroom, laying in my bed watching YouTube before falling asleep. Thankfully, I was able to get on the correct meds and while it took a while for me to return to humanity, thanks to the support of my family and starting to go to the gym consistently, I'm feeling better than ever. Although, it is hard for me to rest when I need to. Resting isn't Rotting, though. If you're struggling with Bed Rotting, start small and be patient with yourself. What got me on the path to recovery was just drinking water first thing in the morning. Whether it was one of my reusable water bottles that I froze or just cold bottled water in my fridge, I started and still start my days with cold water. Reach out for professional health and get outside. Whether it's just sitting on the porch or going to the gym or to see a movie, it doesn't matter. A body in motion stays in motion. You're not alone and you are worthy of living a full life. Good Luck.

I separate “bed rotting” into 3 categories because calling it “bed rotting” is a cute little internet thing.
Giving it an actual name, that means something, can help break a cycle.

1: bed rest- its been a long week. Im tired and im not going to do anything because i need the extended rest.

2: Relaxation Spite- i dont NEED the rest but i dont want to do anything else. So the ‘plan’ for the day is nothing because i can

3: Sliding into Depression- i havent moved in 16 hours and i’ve done nothing but scroll.

Because I have 3 categories i can label WHY im doing the ‘bed rotting’ and break myself away from it if i keep doing #2 for too long or #3 at all.

joke's on you, i quit before getting my useless degree

I used to flip apartments for a living (get them ready between residents). Once, we had someone move out that left an apartment in such bad shape that we had to hire a company that cleaned up after crime scenes. They had been hiding a full size pig in their apartment. Due to the fact that they were hiding the pig, they just let it go potty on the floor. The floor was so soaked in pig waste that it had to be replaced, including the sub floor. It was weeks of work and thousands  and thousands of dollars before the unit was safe and hygienic. It was a second floor apartment so we had to replace the ceiling below it as well. Luckily, that unit was empty. I will remember that mess and that smell for the rest of my life.

I've been a shut-in for about seven years now, due to severe anxiety among other issues. I'm very fortunate to still have the capacity to care for myself and my living space, I just can't bring myself to go out of the house unless it's maybe once a month and with the company of another person. It's easy for me to feel like a burden on others and that time is running out.

My caretakers gave me a dog around 2021 and while it took me a bit, she's become my reason for getting out of bed every day. She helps me regulate my anxiety and I've had more of a routine now that I'm taking care of her. She's helped me recover and just recently, after those seven whole years, I was able to see a friend face-to-face and spend the afternoon out with them. No panic attacks.

I wouldn't wish that type of isolation on anyone and I do hope the number of people like me will someday fall for the right reasons. It's one small step at a time, but the world is so much bigger when your existence isn't confined to a single room.

7:06 Ok, so in China, you don't flush the toilet paper, you throw it into the trash. The pipes are not made for handling toilet paper, and you will clog them if you flush it. In very new buildings, you can do it, but in a lot of places, you can't, so by default, people don't flush toilet paper.

I hate this bedrotting aesthetic trend so much. I have ADHD and few health conditions that make me chronically fatigued, which means that while I'm open, productive and energetic at job, I tend to crash after it (and it's not a burnout, I like my job). Because of that usually throught the week stuff just... piles. Some discarded clothes here, some plates or mugs there, unfolded laundry getting moved from the chair to the bed and the other way around, dust... it's been a struggle for most of my life. And a source of deep shame, because I always felt like a total looser when I was crashing out with a phone on my floor, using a hoodie as a pillow and just recharging after work. Like, what "normal" person does that? All around me people had their active lifes, their parties, meetings with friends and so on, while I just... existed. I try to clean up every weekend, sometimes better, sometimes worse, but enough to function like a human being.
And now it's cute and quirky and aesthetic. I felt the same about the "girl dinner" trend.
All my life I've bee fighting for the semblance of functionality and pretending I don't struggle because how do you explain to someone that you just can't pick up that pile of papers and tidy it up because your brain refuses to do so unless you trick it into starting somehow? It's embarassing, it's a problem, not a damn aesthetic or a funny hashtag.

That gamers hotel room is a biohazard 🤢

I was a little annoyed when a hotel I stayed at insisted they come in to clean after two days (I was only staying for 4 and I don't like people up in my stuff), but now I'm realizing it's to avoid these sorts of situations

Those trash houses at the end brought back a repressed memory ):

I grew up in a level 3 hoarder home. Didnt really have pests most of the time because my mom sprinkled boric acid like it was carpet cleaner (except for the part where you vacuum the excess up) but there was stuff everywhere all the time.

My parents survived a pretty bad famine in their early years. Well i should say my mom did because my dad's family was rich so they never starved but my mom was 78 pounds at 5'2 during her physical that year.

We've been in america since i was 3 and while we were poor, food is pretty abundant here, its pretty hard to starve so my mom would do her best to not rub off her trauma habits onto us. We would joke a bit about how if there were any leftovers from anyone else in the family, even cartilage on chicken, she would eat it, but it never really stuck out at me that was odd behavior.

But then one day i passed the kitchen and i saw my mom sitting in front of the fridge eating from a bag of shredded cheese. I didnt think of it as particularly odd, she did that often. However this time something felt off because she got a bit shy about it. I realized it was a bag i had thrown away because i saw it had green mold. By the time i checked again, she had finished and left but i dug through the trash. there was nothing new in the trash so it should have still been on the top like before, but it had been buried deeper, and aside from a few green pieces, the 1/3rd full bag had been emptied.

I never told anyone about that incident.

My mother was a hoarder. As kids we thought it was normal and fun to play on mountains of junk. As we got older we tried to clean it up, but just got right back junky.

5:20 People who leave messes like this for staff to clean are subhuman.

Such a lack of consideration for service workers will always irritate me beyond words. It doesn’t matter if a worker’s job is to clean, you still pick up after yourself as much as possible out of courtesy and common human decency.

you've convinced me, i'm putting away my phone for today. goodnight, good people

I'm bedridden for the past few years due to a mix of physical and mental illness. I still manage to treat myself better than this, despite the crippling depression and crippling crippling. If you're suffering like me, know it's possible. You'll get better.

Bet rotting just sounds like chronic stress fatigue and or high/mid functioning depression at some point 😭😭

oh my show is ON.

I feel like something that isn't being acknowledged is that this isnt just being lazy, or mentally ill, or not wanting to participate in society. This is a freeze response, a natural survival response to continued stress and pressure. It's not as simple as "not wanting to" but literally not being able to, either because of environment or motivation. Let's be real, more people dont feel hopeful about the future, and already exhausted the other stress responses (cant fight, cant fly, fawning didnt work, last stop: FREEZE!). I feel bad for these people, and anyone can be a "bedrotter" because anyone can end up in a freeze state.

Hustle culture is a scam to benefit the already wealthy. So bed rotting is a symptom of an exhausted population who doesn't want to work until they're 90 and then keel over in a nursing home days later, you know?
