Few caliber debates get as heated as this one. One has built its reputation on raw power, while the other has become a favorite among shooters looking for something they can actually carry.

On paper, the answer seems obvious. In the real world, the comparison isn't nearly as simple.

If you had to trust one against a grizzly, which would you choose—and why?

I carry a 357 mag with 200 gr. hard cast bullets into the woods simply because I can shoot it more accurately than a 44 mag. But then again I’m dealing with a potential black bear threat as opposed to Grizz.

44 Magnum. Lyman Cast Hard 245 Grain SWC, 22 Grains of Alliant 2400 Powder. 6-1/2 barrel Smith & Wesson Model 29-2. I've taken 2 Grizzly and 4 Black Bears with this gun and load. I never had to shoot more than twice. Elmer taught me well.

Hard cast bullets have been the "go to" bullets for large animal defense for a long time. However, there are some new designs that I am curious about whether these can be effective in the same manner. At least a couple of manufacturers offer a solid copper bullet with flutes in the bullet to displace tissue as it travels through the animal. One brand named G9 offers a spiral fluted copper round, called an "external hollow point", and another they call the Woodsman that has a conventional flat nose copper bullet, similar to hard cast lead bullets.

My question is what people think of how these rounds would perform relative to hard cast lead rounds. Feedback is appreciated.

I prefer my Marlin 1894 in 44 magnum loaded with hard cast bullets. I figure I should be able to get off at least two shots, maybe, maybe three. One hit in the right spot should resolve the problem.

If I'm getting one shot, it's going to be a 12 gauge, 3 inch, one ounce slug. Even if it doesn't penetrate the skull, it will disrupt that brain long enough for me to finish the job.

Everyone is a gun/bear expert, every video says the same thing, everyone compares revolvers vs semi auto, caliber vs caliber, and probably 90 % of these experts have never been in bear country or more than likely don't even own a firearm, just repeating what they have read or heard. If you are in bear country leave the bear spray at home and keep that handgun where it belongs...in your hand not in the holster. Carry that shotgun in your hands too (if you prefer a shotgun over a handgun) and not slung over your shoulder...always be prepared and expect the unexpected at all times... and that's the best advice I can give.

Then there is the jamb.

I feel safe with my 460 325 grain hard cast or500 mag 440 grain guarantee

Both rounds can also be used in carbine form. With a 12 to 16 inch barrel, the energy will increase. You can carry 2 guns and one ammo. Practice makes perfect. If you drill, then when that bear charges, your training will take over. You have to approach those animal with a militant mindset.

if you have doubts don't go in the woods

Being aware of your surroundings at all times is essential to survival in bear country. You must be at the same level as the charging bear is for a succesful head shot with hardcast ammo.

Or you can get the best of both worlds with the .44 automag.

I think the new revolver 45/70 might be the answer...

You would be amazed how fast BIG bullets slow with distance.
Consider the energies at 60yds (potential 1st shot). Both 44/10mm have far less energy at 60yds than at their muzzles.
Enter the BRNO 7.5FK, 30cal 110gr solid copper @ 2Kfps, 16+1
44mag penetration up close, and at 100yds, the 7.5 bullet STILL carries the MUZZLE energy of a 357mag.
That's what 30cal buys you,, it slows way less.
The BRNO is also more accurate at distance (better than 1moa), with faster followup, than any other powerful handgun.
And I don't think you'd lose anything over the others up close.

A think a LOT of people, myself included, think they’re indestructible with a pistol in their hands. But with a beast like this surprising you and coming at you like Usain Bolt?! Good fucking luck!! 😂😂

@christiancook736 1 day ago

Legit question here because I have no clue. Do people not carry their pistol of choice IN THEIR HAND when in bear country? I 100% would 🤷🏻‍♂️

I have a Fisher Custom and I use 45 Super Buffalo Bore plus P takes down the 10MM being close to the same in every aspect except a larger bullet! It beats the 10MM hands down! My 454 Casull destroys the 44 mag and the 460 takes apart the 454 Casull! Only to S&W 500 beats the 460 but not when it comes to my being able to feed the 460 with three different loads!

@larrystone9474 2 months ago

You ignored a LOT of important facts. How hard a bullet hits matters tremendously. If a smaller and slower 10mm bullet strikes a heavy bone, the bone will stop or turn it. If the heavier and faster 44 magnum bullet hits that same bone it's going to break it or shatter it. It is also much more likely to knock the bear down giving you extra time for a follow up shot. It also creates a larger wound channel. It's the difference between getting hit by a pickup truck and a semi!
The ballistics of a 10mm are MUCH closer to a .357 magnum than they are a 44 magnum
Be VERY cautious about taking advice from self-designated experts on the internet. I doubt this clown has even seen a grizzly outside a zoo nor fired a single round from either a 10mm or 44 magnum handgun outside a shooting range
