On 6 June 1944, as American troops landed at Utah Beach during D-Day, a small force of U.S. 82nd Airborne Division paratroopers fought a desperate battle at La Fière Bridge near Sainte-Mère-Église, Normandy. Controlling this narrow causeway across flooded marshland was essential — it was one of the only routes the U.S. 4th Infantry Division could use to move inland from the beachhead.
Throughout 6–9 June 1944, paratroopers of the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment held the bridge against repeated German counterattacks, including infantry, artillery, and armoured vehicles advancing from the Cotentin Peninsula. At times the Americans were isolated, low on ammunition, and nearly surrounded, but if the Germans broke through, they could reach Utah Beach and disrupt the Allied landings.
This episode follows the entire battle from the airborne night drop on D-Day through the fighting along the causeway, showing how the 82nd Airborne secured one of the most important objectives of Operation Overlord and enabled the link-up with seaborne forces.
Using battlefield locations, wartime reports, and period photographs, we explore why the fight for La Fière Bridge was one of the most critical engagements of the Normandy invasion — and why its outcome helped secure the Allied foothold in France.
