Erlang is the sincerest friend we always wished for, but hardly ever met.
Wukong and Erlang used to be peers when Wukong served in the celestial palace, despite their huge difference in identity (Erlang is the military general while Wukong is merely a "horseman"). The horseman is the lowest rank "celestial official" in the celestial palace but the naive Wukong used to think it was a big deal, until he later found out when he was not invited to the fruit tasting ceremony (apparently due to his insignificant identity), and learned that his job assignment was barely an insult from the lord Yu Di, as the celestials thought Wukong was only a filthy lowlife creature and does not deserve a place in the majestic Celestial Palace.
Wukong got provoked when he found out the truth, he then made a huge mess in the palace, fled away, and paid a visit to the East Sea Palace and took the [Sea stabilizing "pillar"] (or "needle" in its direct translation) from the sea palace which later became his weapon - the infamous monkey king bar. He then declared war to the Celestial Palace, Where Wukong also battled with Erlang (Er lang actually subdued Wukong in the end but it was with the help from other celestial Tai Shang lord).
Er lang's third eye is actually called the [Heaven's eye] which Erlang can break through any delusion and see the truth (kind of like Wonder woman's Lasso of Truth), I guess that is where Erlang learned about Wukong's true nature - rebellious but with kind heart, dare to challenge and protect the average from the unfairness.
If you pay close attention to Erlang's speech and facial expression in the beginning scene, the actions or trials he put on the protagonist and the final words he said to him before pushing him back in the shrine in the "good ending", you will know his brotherly love for Wukong and how he wished to spare Wukong from being controlled (the headband) by the corrupted bureau - Celestial Palace. Wukong is dead but what perished was only his body, his unfaded will and consciousness is retrieved and succeeded by the protagonists through his own journey and Erlang even said his (protegonist) journey has just began.
Lastly, some may ask, if Erlang is all about to challenge the corruption in the Celestial Palace, why didn't he stand up against the Lord Yu Di himself. Well. He is Yu Di's nephew. The oriental mythology largely preserve the characters and virtue value of the east - Filial, unlike the greek mythology - incest and slaughtering within the family (just kidding).
Apologies for my poor command of English (not my native language).
In the first ending, The Destined One accepted the circlet, which caused him to just get reborn again (Since the cutscene shows a nascent monkey). In the second ending, The Destined One did not accept the circlet, instead he gives a slight checky smile and you see the memories of Wukong.
There are two endings after defeating Stone Wukong Boss:
1. Player fails to inherit Wukong's memories. They are given the headband and trapped in stone forever, submitting to heaven's control. Reincarnated without Wukong's personality or soul, essentially losing the battle to break free from heaven. Loser's Ending.
2. If player defeats Erlang and the four heavenly kings before facing Stone Wukong Boss, they'll successfully inherit Wukong's memories, REJECTING the headband. Then reincarnate as the Original Sun Wukong with everything intact, continuing the fight against heaven seen here in the flashback cutscene 31:53(present time of the player toasting fallen comrades) after the original legend was portrayed in reversed. Winner's Ending.
Premise of the story: The game is a sequel to the original Journey to the West legend. Basically what 'could' happen afterward. Heaven became a 🐍at the end of JTTW and betrays englightened Sun Wukong who was living in peace. Apparently there're more endings to come, and the game's anti-cheat systems are so good that even Chinese hackers are struggling to uncover other endings with binary/hex editing. The game can't stop winninng.
PS. they included the original widely-popular OST song from Journey to the West drama show released in 1986. It was aired all the way into the 2000s. So it's pretty much a nuclear nostalgia explosion in the face for any Asian natives.
So from what I understand we only found two endings so far which is good and bad ending. In the bad ending he did not receive the original wukong's memories and therefore didn't snap back in time to reject wearing the headband like he planned to when he scattered himself. This ending is considered the "good" ending because its assumed he regains his memories and rejects the headband and continue to wage war against heaven after toasting to his past comrades.
I love that in the 1st ending we’ve seen where he did end up wearing the crown, he was in armor. Where as in this version, he was in a Taoist shirt!!! Taoist! Meaning he’s completely out of that Buddhist realm the highest Taoist achievement is to understand and be in command of the “Tao/Dao”, which makes one the same as the cosmos...WuKong’s first teacher where he learned all his abilities was PuTiLaoZu, a Taoist ZhenRen (real man/ true master, highest level of Taoist practice)...now he’s finally back at his own root!!!! He did not accept that Buddhist crown!
In thisscene, Erlang Shen's transformed appearance faithfully reproduces the original description in Journey to the West. Erlang Shen displayed a top-tier magical power: Fa Tian Xiang Di(法天象地 Imitate heaven and earth). When using this magical power, the practitioner transforms into the likeness of heaven and earth, mimicking their scale, emulating the sky, imitating the earth, becoming as tall as the sky and as vast as the earth. The Fa Tian Xiang Di does not belong to the seventy-two transformations, it is a rare magical skill in "Journey to the West" used only by Sun Wukong and Erlang Shen. The seventy-two transformations can only change one's height to a thousand zhang(仗 1 zhang approximately 3.3m), while the Fa Xiang Tian Di can transform one's height to ten thousand zhang.
The fight against the four kings is probably the most epic boss fight i have ever saw in my life of playing videogames. Everything from the fighting to the finishers to everything is just perfect.
