Never seen this series, but hell, there's more excitement and tension in the first five minutes of this than there is five NBA games today. Back when men played real, physical ball.
Larry came into The NBA with Boston in 1979 as a rookie ..... he was damn good in that and 1980 better still in 1981 he was showing his worth and exceptional skills none knew how great ...... until this and two more great years and three MVP / three outside shooting contests !!! So diversely skilled and smart in knowing what to do and how to psyche out his opponents !
Boston defense collapsed and double teamed anybody who tried to drive to the net, plus they boxed out and rebounded much more effectively than Philly. I don’t know what planet Dawkins was on but he wasn’t trying to rebound defensively. Double D had the talent and strength , he just didn’t like to work for rebounds, which is a big reason they drafted him. Boston was a great team, it was always a battle when they played the Sixers. It didn’t matter if it the playoffs or regular season. Both Philly and Boston fans were the most crazed in the NBA. These were the golden years of the NBA.
A 76’ers fan thru and thru. Robert Parrish was the key figure in game seven. It seemed as if every shot he took went in. The Sixers turnovers in the last four minutes absolutely killed them. As great as Dr. J was, he was responsible for three or four ill contrived passes. At least the Sixers won the following year in game seven in Boston Garden.
This was the single greatest sporting event I ever attended. Boston was down 3-1 in the series but clawed their way back in games 5 and 6 winning each game by just 2 points. Game 7 was in the Boston Garden but tickets were impossible to get. My buddy Fish and me both worked for Pepsi Cola back then and Fish had the Garden for one of his accounts. Fish delivered the tanks with the Pepsi syrup to the Boards and Bladed Restaurant inside the Garden. We would wear our fake Pepsi Cola work shirts. Fish carried fake supplies over his shoulder while I clung to an empty toolbox while making believe it was heavy with tools. We entered the Garden at the front where all the offices were at 150 Causeway St. and took the freight elevator up 3 floors to the inside of the Garden. After that we bulldozed our way past the security usher announcing to him loudly that we were emergency maintenance mechanics for Pepsi here to service the dispensing equipment. The security usher was suspicious. He eyeballed both of us. But before he could react or say a word we were gone like the wind. We could hear him behind us yelling out, “I know you two are full of shit you bastards.” But we were in. We sat on the stairs behind one of the baskets. Everyone was in festive Game 7 mood so no one bothered us the whole night. We had a great view no charge and got to watch one of the greatest games in NBA playoff history in person. In the 4th quarter the Celtics were down by 7 with only 5 minutes to play. Boston was on life support. It didn’t look good. But Philly went cold missing nine of their next ten shots. With time running out Larry Bird grabbed a defensive rebound, dribbled the length of the court, stopped and hit a 14 foot bank shot off the glass to win the game 91-89 and the series 4 games to 3. Boston Garden went shithouse. The fans stormed the floor. Bedlam. Johnny Most went crazy too because they were down 3-1 and came back to win the series. They went on to win the title that year beating the Rockets in the finals in 6 games. It was only Bird’s 2nd year in the pros. Good memories for me.
Just an outstanding and intense ball game...Both teams showing they won't go down without a fight...Just the excitement and the crowds reaction just let you know how explosive this game was...Love this kind of basketball...The determination, hustle and pressure
