Us badass Honda scooter riders call ourselves the 99 percenters.

Been riding Harley’s for a long time. The idea of joining a group that has all these rules and hurt feelings if you don’t follow the rules is stupid.

I'm 82 and no longer ride. One thing I've noticed is that the "outlaw" bikers, "hell's Angeles", "Bandidos" etc no longer ride the bikes they rode 50 years ago. In the 1950's 60's and early 70's none of the 1%ers would have been caught on the bikes you see them on today. Back in the day these "full dress hogs" were only ridden by posers. None of the 1%ers of my era would have been caught dead on a bike with windscreens, farings, or sissy bars, and sound systems didn't exist. How did this become acceptable? Outlaws in lounge chairs.

I have built and ridden all sorts of bikes. Motorcycling is a great anti-depressant of all..

There's a book I read as a young man, titled "The Mouse and the Motorcycle". It was one of the first books I ever read and I still remember parts of it to this very day and I'm 63 now.
Your book and title brought back fond memories.

I was on my Harley cruising down a SoCal freeway when a group of around 100 Hell's angels came roaring up behind me. Instead of switching lanes to pass they split up, one line going down my left side and the other down my right. It was a little intimidating and thrilling at the same time. The sound of 100 Harleys passing about 2 feet on each side is something I will never forget.

1% was never supposed to be a numerical estimation of how many were outlaws. Rather, it was the first motorcycle counterculture movement, as a result of the AMA’s response letter to the defamation of motorcycling as a result of the Hollister biker riot of independence weekend 1945. In the letter, the AMA responded with the phrase “99% of motorcyclists are well mannered, upstanding people” the motorcycle clubs in short, amplified this separation, and began wearing a 1% patch to denote their protest against the AMA’s depiction of their character, and to illustrate their separation from it.

70 years old ,rode with a small club for 25 years ,partied with all kinds ,now all but a few are still alive and rideing time has taken it’s toll , have a lot of great funny memories , stories I can’t tell anyone , now go out for a ride by myself think about the past and smile , knowing time is getting short and I will see my old pals when it’s my time to crossover.

The 1947 Gypsy Rally in Hollister was sponsored and run by the Salinas Ramblers Motorcycle Club under Larry Ketzel. I was Club Historian and interviewed a member who was there and helped. Most of what you have heard about it was bs generated by the SF Chronicle. Far more riders showed up than were anticipated for. There were a few fights and only one fatality when a guy drunk rode his bike off of 25 and into a piece of farm equipment.

There was a documentary in Germany about biker gangs and it came to attention that most of the members didn't ride or even have motorcycles, whereas there was only one of them with a bike license. The majority drove American pick-ups.

The biggest criminals wear ties. Bikers are pretty simple: treat me as you want to be treated. I have been a patched member long time ago. It was fun while it lasted, but i feel much better riding alone. Stay safe outhere riders, keep the rubber side down.

I still remember the feeling of riding my first (small) bike at the age of 12, not having to push pedals, 50 years later still lovin it.

I’ve been building custom choppers since the 70,s and I believe those riding the true custom builds are the real 1%. . Wearing a patch just identifies you to the larger group, that’s fine, if you need the close brotherhood. I’ve been there and done that. Now I prefer just riding my builds on my own terms . Wherever. Whenever.

6:37 The original term Hell's Angels comes from the 1930 movie produced by Howard Hughes. It was about WWI fighter pilots. As far as one percenters go, they got old and their children went to university and they became lawyers. They came home and said to their parents, we're not interested in what you do, white collar crime is where it's at. But the concept lives on in the form of dentists, realtors and bankers who like to ride on the weekends and fantasise about a world they never knew and probably never existed in the form they imagine anyway.

@hootertexas9711 1 year ago

Riding independent is much more rewarding than a club with all the drama it brings. You can go where you want leave when you want and not worry about their bs
